    Thompson Capitalizes on a Tragedy

This certainly isn't the typical CS-Nation fare, but I really felt compelled to post about this here. It seems as though lawyer turned nut job, Jack Thompson, felt the need to capitalize on the recent Virginia Tech shootings.
Yep, despite the fact that he's a known liar, infamous for threatening fellow attorneys and judges and is on the cusp of (one would hope) losing his license to practice law in Florida, Jack Thompson managed to weasel his way onto Fox News to spew his own particular brand of hate and lies.

That's right, Thompson is trying to link the worst shooting in U.S. history, the one that occurred earlier today at Virginia Tech, to video games.
There's low, and then there's this. It really disgusts me how, in a case where nobody knows the motive or the details, he tries to spew his filth onto an unsuspecting and grieving nation. That's bad form, very bad form.

It has been quite the tragedy today at Virginia Tech. I, and everyone else at CS-Nation, extend our hearts to those family and friends of all persons affected by today's events.

It should be obvious that violent video games can influence individuals to committ violent acts. But that doesn't mean they should be blamed on video games nor should video games be "banned" in any way.

...Why is that obvious? If there is a link, it's an insanely vague and small link. Being male has a much greater bearing on whether you're violent or not than playing violent video games does. And even if there is a correlation, that doesn't mean that the violent video games cause people to commit violent acts. The effect could be exclusively the other way round, or people who are inherantely violent could be drawn towards violent games. The games may have no effect on their already violent nature.

And, yeah, blaming the event on games, based on nothing, so soon after the event happened, is just ridiculously stupid.

I realize that and I'm not saying that if you play violent video games you're going to shoot up the school. I said video games CAN influence people. It's a psychological fact that violence CAN do this to people.

A cloud of the wrong shape can make a person go psycho. Big whoop.

Some video games are a little violent and cross the line. I remember when I was younger, around the age of 13, I wouldn't play the original Quake. It was too violent for me. I didn't (and still don't) want to play a game that is basically just gratuitous violence for violence's sake alone.

Now, however, I play games that are a bit more violent, since I can for the most part tune out the violence and focus on the actual gameplay element. Such as CS (when it's actually being played as intended, with objectives, instead of fragfests). I won't play Grand Theft Auto, though, because of its level of violence, etc.

I think violent media in general has a large portion to play in the increase of violence in real life. Of which video games are just one symptom. Symptom, not cause. Violence in the media, in all forms, has grown.

Totally agree with this, well not in those words, but yeah that guy can go crawl up some deathly place and rot for all I care. Us gamers, game makers, computer people, etc, etc always get blamed for this bullshit. Doesn't anyone everything think that games don't always affect the mind set, but people around them, the places they play the games, who they play with. I get extremely pissed off with little 4-13 kids are playing CS\CS: S and other games, they're parents don't give a shit anymore is the problem. I point my fingers are the parents for little their kids play these f'ed up games and crap like this, there is a rating on games for a F'ing reason!!!! Learn to follow it and maybe the game communties will stop getting blamed for this... But anywho, I'm sorry to all families who might have lost someone there.

I've yet to see REAL proof that violent video games causes tragedies such as this one today.

If they crossed the line they wouldn't of been released....

Tragedies happen it's a way of life, linking this to video game's is pretty stupid, it's like saying "when a ambulance crashed rushing someone to hospital its because they played grand theft auto" its because they have nothing else to link it too other then video games, i would just say that the guy just wasnt a full shealing.

                    Its just a terrible tragedie.

I don't even know if video games were involved with this shooting, but if you want to know if violence in general can cause tragedies like this, just turn on your tv in the next few days. I bet there will be another shooting somewhere. Usually someone sees a shooting all over the news, then does it in their own town.
