Yeah, testing the waters with an established game, an OLD game at that, that is the most popular so that it's guaranteed to return some revenue even if it's a flop overall and won't be introduced into other games.
Gah, My head wants to explode from the nonsensical terms you throw around, tell me how you would TEST something with the LARGEST audience.

Movie screenings don't throw out a movie to 1,000,000 people to see if anyone liked it, they use small groups.

What part of a company using their largest means to test a revenue making scheme such as in-game ads, do you not get? Testing the waters with ONE product. If they weren't testing anything, they'd jump right into in-game adverts in all of their multiplayer games.

Maybe because you would never TEST something on your LARGEST audience, are you a business dullard or what?

They are full force going into this, if you can't realize.

They don't NEED to test the waters, they don't take feedback anyway.

You only said testing in the first place because all you ever do is suckle the tit of anything valve does.

I can see it now : "In an ongoing effort to improve gameplay to counter-strike, we have removed buying of weapons, you will now have airlifts of assorted weapons drop from crates you must break open to receive guns, stay tuned for more great updates from valve!

This is great for gameplay -Zips."

M4 you're ranting, and ranting never wins an argument. Oh and please leave the "anti-CS:S" attitude at the door when you come in, it makes those of us who love and play ALL Valve games irritated.

My best guess is that they're seeing how ads are received by one part of the playerbase of all they're games, and probably the easiest game to add advertising into. There won't be problems with framerates that source games would have for a start.

Don't forget that TF2 is just round the corner, plus maybe other updates for other games. I'm sure that testing the advertising system in an older game is far easier to achieve than in one using a differing technology.

If you do not like Valve's marketing techniques, what better way of sticking it to them is there than not playing the game? There are plenty of other games out there. Now stop crying and realize these two things:

              1. That's the business world.

              2. That's life.

Deal with it, complaining is useless.
Haha, advertising is life? What a dumbshit.

Reading all of these comments, I'm seeing a lot of points of view from the consumers, and a lot of business based points of view, and both arguments are valid, however I have yet to see any kind of point of view from the Developers, Valve may own the license to the name, and EA own's it's publishing rights, however, due to the fact that they can't push out the games as fast as they want, they need extra revenue to provide incentive for their games to continue to be patched/upgraded/programmed. Basically it's the same setup as an MMO, how can they upkeep the servers and bandwidth if they don't have the constant inflow of cash? (plenty can argue about it, but it's the truth).

The constant inflow of cash provided from in-game advertisements can allow for valve to pay more employees to potentially fix said "problems" in the game, without having to charge us, the consumer, a monthly fee. Would you prefer have Steam a pay-to-play system?

They're making tons on distribution licensing (but not enough), they're making plenty on their own games, but HL2 sales have gone down and they haven't released anything since Episode 1, though people are anxiously awaiting TF2, Portals, and Episode 2, it'll probably be a while. They need something to fill the gaps.

Think not so much in a general business sense, but an overall sense, and this whole setup is a no brainer to anyone.

I really don't see new ad-based maps becoming popular, but they're free to try the concept out and see what comes of it.

The argument going on about the definition of "testing" and such is ridiculous. Using CS1.6 first makes sense for two obvious reasons:
                    • When pimping your advertising space to developers, the words "5 billion player minutes monthly from one game alone" sounds pretty nice.

                    • Even if the community hates these ads in 1.6, the worst VALVe can suffer from it is having these CS addicts move on to CS:CZ or CS:S, promoting sales of these titles to any that don't already have them.
Either way, you're looking at more money for VALVe.

VALVe doesn't make a whole lot from selling CS1.6 at this point, but a ton of people play it. It makes business sense to screw over that community and make some easy money off of them. People hating VALVe for their decisions is nothing new -- look back on anything from the jumping change and shields to the HL2 delay, and you'll see nothing but bitter hatred being expressed on the forums. The end result though? The games themselves are still good, so VALVe weathers the storm just fine.

Yeah CS1.6 players (and perhaps others later) are getting screwed in the name of business, but that's nothing new from VALVe, and honestly most people will just keep on playing it, come what may.

Why do people act like something making "business sense" means that it's acceptable? It makes perfect business sense for companies to fuck us in the ass all the time, and do things like privatize water and sell it back to us with a straight face, but that doesn't mean it's okay.

Valve didn't make those games, the mod development teams were for the most part hired by valve to continue development after Valve bought the mod titles.

                        Counter-Strike was a mod

Day of Defeat was a mod

Valve keeps them alive by giving them a new look, and new gameplay style

Team Fortress was (I believe) Valve's first title, wasn't it a quake mod way back when? Or was that just an old DeathMatch Classic they made? I don't remember, but valve started out as mod makers, I honestly am impressed at their staying ability and ability to form a company as large and, well, impressive as it is.

Valve has owned the Team Fortress name since the beginning, and in all arguments valve "ruining" the game is near impossible as the games creation was in their own image of how the game should be, so any changes in the future really can't ruin it because they original developers really think it should be this way, not that way, etc. etc.

Now, Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike were purchased titles that were developed by third parties, they were the most popular half-life mods.

Sven-Coop had offers (I think) and refused to sell, it was a coop play of HL1, great mod btw, you should try it sometime, and I believe the NS team has probably had offers as well but they didn't hand it out.

In the end, it's up to the original developer to take the game where they wanted it to go, and the original developers handed it over to valve, now it's their game, they can do what they want with it, period, argument over, nothing can sway them.

Both non-valve games, both are great.

Buying the game from someone does not make it a valve game.

By keeping them alive, you mean dod/dod:s being a dead game, and cs:s a pubbers wetdream, congrats.. they appeal to the lowest common denominator of players.

And what exactly makes you so high and mighty?

Let me guess, you're the 1/4 of the population of CSS gamers that are *NOT* pubbers? Guess what, I wouldn't be a pubber if I had the choice, I hate the way most pubs are run, I hate weapon restrictions, and I despise most gameplay changing plugins, however, I also absolutely hate FY maps, and AIM maps, and other maps, of the like, Team DM is meant for Team DM games, this game has objectives.

Valves first mistake in their conquest of the games that they now legally own the rights to and can legally call them their own and change them however they want, was telling the punkbuster team to screw off and left their own game vulnerable for a couple of YEARS before starting to enact their own anti-cheat, which still is awful btw.

Trust me, I'm no more happy in valves performance than you, however, they own the games, they can do what the hell they want with them, it doesn't matter what the community says.

For all points and arguments, they own it, they can do what they want, it is now a Valve game, deal with it.

                              CS 1.6 or CS:S

                                based on that link

                                CS 1.6: 78,128

                                CSS: 83,878

Last I checked: 83,878 > 78,128, unless someone really screwed with the way math works...
