Steam News Update - August 18

The news update for this week is short and to the point. There's mention of the DoD: Source update that I have kindly posted right below this news piece. There is also mention about the Leipzig Games Convention where new footage for Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 will be shown, and that footage is promised to be released to the public shortly afterward!

Oh yes, there seems to be a mention of this game called Counter-Strike: Source and some update dealing with an enhanced radar and changes to the pricing system. Maybe you guys have heard something about this? I really haven't been following this whole Counter-Strike thing.
Today we released an update for Day of Defeat: Source that addresses a number of issues people were having with the game. Details of this release are available here.

Next week we'll have another Counter-Strike: Source release, where we'll be unveiling the new radar that was first mentioned here. We're looking forward to seeing how people like it, along with how it will change gameplay. Looking beyond this release, we'll be taking a look at the economy of Counter-Strike and how we're pricing weapons.

Around Valve these days, the Leipzig Games Convention is the focus of everyone working on Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. Coming out of next week we'll be releasing some of the new footage for everyone to see.
It seems as though the months of no Counter-Strike: Source love will be a thing of the past once these new updates begin to roll out. It seems as though there is a focus on advancing the game beyond its 1.6 and Condition Zero roots. While some, like me, may see this as an advancement and a chance to really differentiate itself from its predecessors, I'm sure others will be quick to disagree. It's probably best to reserve judgement until the updates are actually released, right? Naaaaw!

I'm really anxious to see this new gameplay footage for all three of those games. Strangely, I'm probably the most excited about the updated Team Fortress 2 footage. Hopefully some gameplay elements will be featured this time around. Episode 2 should hopefully feature some amazing visuals that are even better than what we previously saw. There are a lot of advancements being made to the Source engine, so it should be interesting to see how Episode 2 benefits from them.

Oh, here's a bit of a side note. If you haven't seen Snakes on a Plane yet, stop reading this and get to your local theater. Remember that you're going to see Snakes on a Plane, a hilarious action flick that has snakes and yes, they are on a plane with Sam Jackson. That's all you really need to know to enjoy it!

      soooooooo

they held back that weapon price update for 1.6 just to have something else to toy with after the release of cs:source. gz business politics.

at least now this won't impact the proper competitive community, so we will hear less people crying about it.

We don't want weapon pricing changes ! (At least for now anyway)

          - We want stable and accurate netcode.

          - We want a fully functional version of Source TV.

          - We want a favourites list that doesn't clear itself every day or two.

          - We want functional physics objects that serve a purpose.

          - We want clarification of material types and their properties.... thickness... strength... etc.

          - We want the defuse kit on the bomb bug fixed.

          - We want grenade damage to be looked at.

          - We want an accurate representation of blood / bullet wounds on the body.

          - We want map lighting fixed.

How hard is this to understand ? These are just minor bugs off the top of my head.

You realize if they held back on any changes that were planned for 1.6, they'd not wait for over two years after Source's release to make these changes? This isn't some held back change from 1.6.

              - I want you to play CS 1.6 -

Also "- We want an accurate representation of blood / bullet wounds on the body."

How the HELL does this help gameplay?, sounds like stupid realism shit. Do you really take the time to look at bullet wounds on a body in order to calculate how many times you have to shoot to kill and if you should go for a headshot or not? No.. you dont..

They are working on bug fixes. They even said so in last week's news update. Don't just expect no bug fixes in these updates, because there will be.

Phoenix: You ever shot someone in the head (confirmed by the console) and saw the blood mark on their chest ? This is what I was referring to. It allows you to see where a player has been wounded. It is already in the game, it just doesn't function as well as it should. It helps identify WHERE you shot an enemy. Either that or a zone based calculator should appear in the console to break down the hit stats.

Zips: These bugs have been around for over a year, and we are constantly fed the same 'we are working on it' line.

Mike: I'm not the only one who wants to see the game fixed as you rather crudely implied in your post. Are you happy with trying to defuse a bomb only to realise you can't because a defuse kit is sitting on it? (Presumably you are since you want me to change 'we' to 'I'....)

I've played Counter-Strike for 7 years now and can identify a lot of it's shortfalls. Granted Valve may want to take a new course with it, but goddamit they should fix the bugs first, because that is what they are.

Here's a nice extra bit from Martin Otten (I assume) @ VALVe in a recent Steam forum post regards upcoming SourceTV fixes:
tv_transmitall isn't working for CS:S yet, please wait for the upcoming CS:S patch. This patch will include major spectator client fixes for SourceTV & CS:S. Try DoD:S to see weapons in first person etc.

There are times when you'll see blood on a player but your shots wont actually have hit him. It's misleading, and that's a problem.
