IGN recently sat down with one of main brains behind the upcoming game Portal, Kim Swift. She sheds a lot of light on what to expect from Portal when it is released with HL2: Episode 2.
IGN: Portal seems more like a puzzle game than anything else. How is the game organized? Are there levels? Do you fight against enemies? Do you fight against a timer? Please explain. There is more where that came from, two pages worth to be exact. Further details are promised closer to the game's release. Kim Swift: Although Portal is a first-person game built using the Source engine, it's unlike Half-Life 2 in some very important ways. With Half-Life 2, Valve made an explicit decision to move towards a seamless world and away from discrete artificial gameplay arenas with level transitions, etc. In Portal, we chose to divide gameplay into a series of trials that you have to complete as a test subject in the Aperture Science Laboratories.
