Steam News Update - June 23

The latest Steam news update hits you hard and fast with a bunch of pretty graphs and charts! Can you handle it? Can you?! Well, hopefully you can because this update focues on the data gathered from Episode 1, and provides some details on Red Orchestra, which had a massive update released today.
As part of Valve's continuing effort to build better games, we have traditionally relied on things like written feedback from players to help decide which improvements to focus on. More recently, Steam has allowed us to collect new kinds of information. Episode One includes a reporting mechanism that tells us about how people are playing the game. We're sharing the EP1 gameplay stats data because we think people will find it interesting, and because we expect to spot emergent problems earlier, and ultimately build better products and experiences as a result. Let us know what you think.

Today the first content update for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 was released. The update combines bug fixes, performance enhancements, various updates requested by the community and 2 new weapons - the German MP41 Submachine gun and the Russian M44 rifle with a bayonet. This is the first in a series of free content updates Tripwire has planned for Ostfront in the coming months so stay tuned for more.

Looks like Episode 1 had an average completion time of right around five hours. Despite the complaints from people who finished in less than three hours, it seems as though the average hit the mark for what Valve promised.

I just finished Episode 1 either yesterday or two days ago. I got to Exit 17 and then just didn't play for a while.

I like the map that has an average number of deaths of 14 on hard.

Is it just me, or did the magnum use to be one hit in hl2 single player? I know they nerfed it in hl2dm, but I could have sworn even in lost coast, which I just played not too long ago, it was one hit. That gun was the most satisfying gun in the game besides perhaps the shotgun. They need to beef up the feel of the two sub machine guns. The combat is still satisfying though.

Take this all with a grain of salt, because I loved the water section in HL2 and I've heard that invalidates my opinions.

They actually made an exciting Strider fight. I can't believe it. Shooting the Striders still isn't satisfying by itself, but finally getting to pop out and kill it after dodging it for so long was awesome. I still hate how when I'm rocketing striders for flying manatees they don't spark and tear apart with each rocket so you can clearly tell that you're about to finish the fucker off. The 8th rocket into the strider leaves the strider looking the same as the first. I want to be able to blow armor off of them.

Isn't there any Red Orchestra Demo which I can try?

The game seems really nice, but I want to test the gameplay etc. before I buy it! :)

They're working on some sort of demo now that their first major patch has been released. BTW: If you get the demo, be sure and play the game more than once. A lot of people dislike the game until they've played it a while and gotten used to it, then they end up loving it.

People didn't like the water section in HL2? It was long yeah but I still liked it.

It was too gimmicky, and I didn't appreciate the fact that gravity had no real effect on the airboat. It just felt so cheesy and unnecessary..

..but that did make it fit in with the rest of HL2.

I'm guessing HL2 was the first video game you'd ever played, because otherwise you would have known that videogames are entertainment and so are by definition superfluous.

As for gimmicky, a mouse and keyboard is also a "gimmick".
