    Valve Lets Off Steam

Just to make something perfectly clear off the bat, we didn't come up with that name for the interview, that is all Computer and Video Games' doing. Don't get us wrong, we're certainly not above using such a tried and true title in future pieces here.

With that said, CVG recently sat down with Doug Lombardi to shoot him a few questions about Valve, Steam, and the direction of the company. Keep in mind, however, that while they may not have been sitting in the same room, there was sitting involved at some point.
At what point and why did Valve decide to make the leap into digital distribution?

Doug Lombardi: After shipping a number of multiplayer games, like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress, we wanted to solve a number of issues to improve customer experience. We'd done simple advancements such as including a server browser within the game itself that, at the time, was a nice step forward in putting players together. But, as online gaming grew, it was obvious that features like auto-updating and more sophisticated anti-cheat measures were going to be requirements. We couldn't find an existing solution for these issues, so we started development internally.
The interview runs for two pages. It may not all be new to you, but it certainly offers up some insight that many may have been unaware of before.

I humbly submit that Steam isn't as bad an idea as I had originally thought, years ago (?) when it came out.

However, the price of convenience is total control by the parent company. . . this, I'm still not comfortable with.

I never really minded the Steam system before, but I'm really starting to appreciate it as of late. When I can preorder SiN Episodes last night, start a preload for that and download the original SiN and play it immediately (well, after about 5 minutes). And I can do all of this while sitting in my chair doing some homework? I can't really complain.

I never hated steam... I don't know why people have such big grudges against it. The only trouble I've ever had with it was the friends list system. Personally I think steam was a great idea, the download servers are always very fast (300kb/s and up for me). The only time they werent fast was when half life 2 went gold and every1 was preloading it...

My problem with Steam lies in the fact that easier updating leads to sloppy programming. I don't play CS as much as I used to, but everytime I do I inevitably have to download some kind of patch. Once after an update, my HL2 had completely stopped working and I had to reinstall the whole thing.

I also don't really like the concept of steam always running in the background, which is the default behaviour of the application. I just wanna play a few games once in a while, not give up my entire system to steam. Also the game browser is nice, but I've seen better. One of the thing I liked in the pre-steam era was HLSW, which was a great game launcher, much better than the one Valve has made in my opinion.

Yes, I've noticed in game server browsers are barren of options in general, which is frustrating. I wish modders would mod that.
