So, what do you guys think of the commentary? Did you all play with and without it enabled? What did you think of the non-HDR improvements (higher res textures, higher-poly models, etc) that were added?

It's just like them talking about how it will take them a few months to hdr-up the old CS:S levels, when in fact all they really have to do is recompile them with the effect enabled.
You have no clue what you're talking about, a fact you made very evident with this post. Go do your homework on HDR rendering and then come back and post when you're not just making things up.

free? dont think it was free for me.. 60 dollars i paid. for source games, back catalogue and a 2 minute extra level?
You paid 60 for a package that didn't include HL2:LC (nor promised it) at the time you bought it. As such, any releases after that point are by their very nature free to you. It's really pointless to try to argue otherwise.

Spoiler tags are created (by rizzuh) as inline code. That's in the php, and I can't change it. It uses javascript and all that nonsense. I could fix it, but rizzuh would have to start it off.
If you really want, we can get this fixed. Zips is the man to talk to, my friend.

I loved learning how they created the effects they did. It was awessome simply for the sake of the commentary, and i really hope they look over all these bullshit negative responses and continue releasing these free tech demos with all their future products. Great job, Valve!

It's a tech demo, so these aren't big issues, but a couple of bugs I noticed:
          • After dying and the game bringing me back to life, all characters that I had shot previously were in T position (arms straight out to side, hovering in the air slightly) instead of lying dead where they should.

          • In commentary mode, I found myself invulnerable to enemy fire in several instances, particularly in the chapel and while battling the final chopper. This was with commentary enabled, but not currently playing.
Again, it's a tech demo, so I'm not particularly worried about it. Just hope those sorts of bugs won't find their way into future releases. :) The commentary was a pleasant addition, with some good comments not only about the tech, but also game design aspects. Overall it was a pretty fun little free level, and it's always nice to take a dip back into the HL2 world, if only briefly.

Looked like Far Cry with a bit better lighting, but half the performance and a quarter of the stuff on screen at once.

I did it in 10 minutes, trying to take my time. climb hill > go in church > out the square > down the pulley. Yes it showcased hdr lighting, but was it worth the wait ? Nope. Ran this with no trouble on maximum settings & resolution, including AA and AF on an xfx 6800gt, a64 3200+, and 1gb of corsair xmsxl.

Brrt, wrong. I know they were forced to do a lot of hard work developing the rendering tech and things like standard cubemaps, but now that it's done, adding it to existing maps is not hard--all that must be done is enable the effect, build an HDR skybox (which, considering most of CS:S's skyboxes are pretty much solid colors with a few clouds here and there isn't hard), and recompile the map.

It was occasionally choppy for me, but seemed to average in the 45-50 FPS range when looking across large expanses. That was on an AthlonXP 2600+ (2.08GHz) / GF6600GT / 1GB RAM. Settings were all on high at 1024x768, with AA bumped up to 2x and AF set to 4x. It was still playable at higher settings than those (ie 4xAA/8xAF), but the mouse lag was too noticeable so I settled there.

Needless to say, I think HDR and the extras are graphical improvements I'll definitely keep enabled for my single-player experiences, as they do look nice, but when it comes to something highly competitive online (e.g. CS:S)... beauty must be sacrificed for quicker response time.

I think the invincibility with commentary on was a feature, not a bug.
