In case you don't know the drill by now, restart your Steam clients in order to get this update. Also, if anyone is interested in keeping up with the progress of the new Steam version, be sure and read the 10/10/05 changelist and the 10/11/05 changelist. The public version is tentatively slated to arrive either later tonight or tomorrow before the release of Rag Doll Kung Fu.
Sorry, this isn't the update that makes your 1.6 look like CS: Source but still play like 1.6. No, this update merely addresses a bug with the friends system wherein certain sent messages could crash the receiver's game.

The update should automatically be downloaded if your Steam client is running. It will be applied after your next restart.
not that good of a update but better than nothing, i think it will be released today before rag doll thingy game. Just seem like the best time to do it..., hopefully they will update Vac2 with the update there about 7 hacks fully working now they need to sort it b4 it gets out of control again:/
I can't help but think that Valve has more important things on their mind, and I don't blame them, because those things (The steam client, third party games) make them quite a bit of money.
Always good to see that they are ensuring even the little problems with Steam are addressed.

It seems pretty dirty to intentionally bury a game. I don't buy EA games (Spore withstanding I suppose) because they remove the online component after a few years.

They're not intentionally burying anything though. It's still there and playable, it's just not going to receive updates anymore. If they were burying it, wouldn't it mean they were going to phase it out completely? That's what I imagine when someone says that. Just as HL itself won't receive any updates, nor TFC, nor CZ, etc... It's all old hat.
The difference is that 1.6 is still in the public eye due to competitive play, MUCH MORESO than Source. Intstead of capitalizing on that by hosting sponsored events, they're intentionally burying it in order to push their precious Source engine.
