    CPL to Use "Fixed" Maps

The CPL has announced that in the upcoming 2005 Winter Championships and in the Razer CAL Tournament, the maps being played will be "fixed." No Rover, no need to cower in fear, it's not that kind of "fixed!" No, instead the CPL will be using updated versions of de_nuke, de_train, and de_dust2 that eliminate the chance of a flashbang bug from being exploited during a match.
These maps are server-side maps which correct the flashbang bugs on three popular maps: de_train, de_dust2, and de_nuke. These maps should prevent match disputes due to illegal flashbangs in tournament play.

These new maps do not require the clients to download or install a patched version to connect to a server with the patched version running.
If the term "illegal flashbangs" gets you hot under the collar, then this is exactly what you're looking for.

A flashbang that exploits problems in the map or engine. For example, on de_dust2 in 1.6, outside of the B bombsite doors on the CT side, throwing a flashbang in between the slanted box and the small box will make it get stuck, explode, and flash everyone inside the B tunnels as if the flashbang went off directly in front of them.

        They're "illegal" because they're against CAL/CPL rules.

A stolen one purchased on the black market.

Anyway, it is good to see that the CPL is preventing exploits from causing disputes.

So..why dont these fixes just get released for everyone? Last time I checked, bugs = bad.

See, the difference is that these aren't bugs that cause client crashes, or that allow the bad guys administrative permissions to your hard drive, or anything like that. They're exploits, and exploits that don't even really give you that much of an advantage unless you're using them against someone who hasn't seen the trick before.

Turns out that most of us really don't give a hoot about these bugs, and apparently that includes Valve as well. About the only people who care are people in serious competition, for whom any tiny excuse to dispute a lost match is to be leapt upon with wild abandon. It doesn't matter that they're all perfectly aware of the bugs, having seen or heard of them many, many times over, or that they can't honestly claim they got taken by surprise and suffered for it. Mostly they just make a mental note of the fact that they saw the opposing team use the exploit and that their demo caught it on tape. If they lose, well, there's more than one way to win a match, now isn't there?

It's no coincidence that the people called upon to arbitrate these pointless disputes are the ones taking steps to close the loopholes. The matches deserve to be decided on the basis of the final score, not some technicality.

Zips gets a gold star for the "fixed" joke.

                Classic. :)

Anyway, if VALVe was going to get rid of all possible exploits, there would be quite a changelist, and I would be sad. Afterall, who can resist the joys of boosting through the roof of cs_assault on a pub and surprising the crud out of some unexpecting CTs? :)

So yeah, this'll be a good thing for leagues, but we're not talking about major things here as far as normal pub play goes.

Scanner, if there was no penalty for using the exploits in competition, people would just go crazy with them. There's absolutely nothing you can do to defend yourself from the flashbang bug on dust2, or nuke. If you're in the area, you're just going to be blind as shit and there's nothing you can do about it. By penalizing teams for using it (in CAL, using it costs you the round, big deal), it keeps teams from using it whenever they can.

By your logic, a team that wins a match with cheaters playing should win regardless, not lose.

Because CS 1.6 is considered the perfect CS by all the fanboys and pro's.. It has no bugs and expliots etc, it's perfect! Therefor it should never be changed/updated ever again!

                    Change = bad!

Bugs and unintended consequences are half of what make the best games fun. CS, HL1DM and QWTF/TFC all had bugs that didn't destroy gameplay but were fun when exploited (often because they only gave a slight real advantage but in an entertaining way).

I'm all for things like that.

                      That is all.

I said nothing of the kind. If you read my last sentence one more time, you'll see that I'm agreeing with the fixes. I'm trying to explain to the dude why it's the CPL instituting these changes rather than Valve, as people outside of competition find the bugs fun or a passing annoyance at worst.

Fun for some, annoyance for most others.. If I find a server full of lame exploit users, I'll leave.. Not much enjoyable gameplay to be found there..

quick thing... why doesn't valve either:

                              A. get off their ass and fix these glaring errors that have existed for versions on end

                              B. just adopt these maps, admit that they don't give a shit about 1.6 anymore, and release a patch with the fixed maps

                              oh, and

                              C. finish CS:S.
