CPL Announces 2006 Season Team Game

Just today the CPL announced its team game for its 2006 season. Much to the delight of the Counter-Strike gaming community, CS 1.6 was named the team game to be played.
For the past few months the CPL has been involved in discussions with developers, publishers, gamers, sponsors and partners in an attempt to select the best games to use during its 2006 season. Recently, the options were narrowed to only two games: a team game and a one-versus-one game.

Today, the CPL announced that the primary team game will be Counter-Strike version 1.6. While details about the 2006 tournament format will be announced later in the year, the CPL will launch two tournaments this year with Counter-Strike 1.6.

One tournament will be hosted at the Winter CPL Event (which will take place at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, Texas, December 14-18, 2005) and the other one will be hosted by CAL. More details on these two tournaments will be announced September 1, 2005.

The one-versus-one game will be announced once agreements are finalized.
I'm sure this excites parts of the CS gaming community, although I am sure it will do nothing to help bring the CS:S and CS 1.6 factions of gaming together.

A lot of the Pros are still playing 1.6... it's just got more exposure right now. When CS:S finally makes the scene it will be sweet. They should have a CS:S mini-tourney on the side at the events, just to showcase it and get more exposure.

Yeah that would be awesome to see a little 1 vs 1 CS: S. CS is still a big game and played by many people. I myself still play it and support it at the LAN's I host, but thats because we get a lot of 1.6 groups here in the South CA area.

I want to marry peagle in a civil union.

            Edit: also
The one-versus-one game will be announced once agreements are finalized.
It's quake 4. They're finalizing contract agreements for quake 4. He didn't know id was open to selling them a license so he never talked to them. Last week he posted on esreality that he was informed by a partner that id probably is open to a license. As long as either of them doesn't get pissed and walk away it will definitely be quake 4.

I dont know how to react to this news ... Obviously, 1.6 is currently better for league play. But Source is definatley very close behind it and I am kind of upset that the CPL is not putting its faith in Source ... Considering the next CPL is in 5 months. Plenty of time.

This is the world tour game, not just one cpl. It will be 5 stops at the very least, which means the cpl is looking for a stable scene, and the 1.6 has just proven that it can pull something like that off.

besides, numbers don't lie, and 1.6>cs:s by 4.1:1.3 billion player minutes/month (not counting cscz, which essentially is pretty looking 1.6). And you know what's even more amazing? I've been following those numbers for a while now, and 1.6 is actually GAINING new players (went up from 3.8 to 4.1).

                  peagle, that is absolutely beautiful.

Quake 4 should be a good addition to the CPL assuming a) Gpig is right, and b) it maintains the level of quality that id titles always have thus far. I still bust out Quake 3 every once in a while for some quick mindless fun...

As far as using CS1.6 instead of CS:S, I've got mixed opinions. Yes, I prefer 1.6 over Source, but if you're doing a league that you want to get hardware sponsors and viewers, etc. involved with... Source is definitely a better showcase game.

Either way, someone benefits, and someone doesn't... that's life. I like CS:CZ best of them all... but I doubt it'll ever see serious competition play, despite having basically identical gameplay to 1.6 while looking notably nicer.

Angel said he wanted 128+ teams at the local stops. Meaning sponsors get 500+ players(and don't forget the Quake players) at each stop looking at booths, trying out the newest logitech mouse, headphones, and other stuff then going back online later and posting on gotfrag about how cool it is and telling people on irc/vent about their experience. On top of that Quake 4 is good for ATI/Nvidia and both 1.6/q4 is good for both intel/amd.

Hrrmm, I don't care much about comptetitive gaming but this doesn't seem like a good thing for the "sport".

And yes, I only play CS:S now, but its hard to believe that a newer game can't take the place of 1.6 by now. Even if it wouldn't be another version of CS.

I dunno man... seems to me they should move ahead. Oh well, whatever.

Don't like the sound of CPL trying to sell their 1.6 event to sponsors in 2006. Maybe they are going to put all their energy into the q4 comp and just use some left over money for the 1.6 comp. Would have perfered to watch CSS but congrats to all the 1.6er's out there.

You guys have no idea how bad source is compared to 1.6 as far as clan wars go (yes I have been in source clans online so I can actually speak from what I have experienced). From a pub players perspective, it is a bad decision because you think source is way better than 1.6 in pub, but from the war perspective it isnt.. even the maps are different + the random objects in the map which can get VERY annoying. Definitely a good decision by the CPL. If you look at the Australian WCG qualifiers, it has been very disappointing how many source teams actually showed up to try and qualify for the national comp. Every stop they make in each city only 4-5 clans would show up. If it was 1.6 they would easily get at least 12 teams participating.
