I dont understand why they would chose a game's graphics engine for this.

I'm sure there are other things running to govern the AI, but maybe they just chose Source for the graphics side because it made things look pretty, and allowed for realistic physics.



edit: after fully reading the article, I was right.

So far, the project scientists have built half of the engine needed to power the virtual world and have begun experimenting with individual agents. They have also adapted a graphical engine used by the popular shoot-em-up game Counter Strike, in order to render their agents visually.
