    Weekly News Update

This week's news update from Valve sheds a bit of light of the future of the Source engine.
Once Lost Coast is released, we will include HDR in our future product releases. For instance, Day of Defeat: Source will feature HDR lighting for all of its levels the day it is released.
The news also includes a link to a video showcasing the differences between Source's HDR rendering and the current rendering methods in Source (Fixed Aperture). It's all so beautifully shiny!

    Weekly News Update

Ah yes, Friday, the day in which we receive another news update from Valve. This week's news update says that the Source version of cs_assault will be released next week! There is also a new terrorist model in the works to replace the old model. There are also murmurings of an expanded character model selection in the upcoming months. You can see the new model running around in the updated assault in a picture below.

Next week we're we're planning on releasing the remade version of cs_assault to Counter-Strike: Source owners. If you don't currently own CS: Source, you can purchase it through Steam via any of the Half-Life 2 packages. Along with the release of cs_assault, we'll be including a rebuilt version of the existing Terrorist model. Over the next few months we'll be expanding the model selections for both teams.
Character model selection? It must be too good to be true!

#1 stunna, looks more contrasted and defined. lighting was pretty much the same. the rendering engine just said > make it sharper and it will give the impression of new lighting (bloom effect?)... looks good though.

I haven't downloaded it yet, but is this the same video that was being played on the VALVe interview bink from not long ago, or something new?

I don't see why this is so new and great. I don't care about the inner working or how advanced they are, it just looks like normal bloom. Deus Ex2 had this and nobody freaked out.

In a few months they'll come out with "EverythingIsFuckingShiny Rendering", that makes everything in the game reflective and blurry.

"the current rendering methods in Source (Fixed Aperture)"

yeah the "aperture" is infinitely small, meaning the depth of field is huge.

I fail to see the "amazing" factor of this. They want us to spend $400 on a new video card to get only a mediocre improvement.

Although I do think Counter-Strike would sweet with this lighting if a map was ever made to utilize this, I still would not spend $400 on a video card that could support this feature unless it could give me a hand job at the same time.

Is that a single hand job or a hand job for life?
