I dunno about in BF2, but piloting in the Desert Combat mod for BF1942 is absolute hell w/o a joystick... albeit a rather amusing and short-lived hell, heh.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up on this download. I'm a reforce rate fix user, so I dunno if I'm gonna end up crashing out like some others described here, but we'll see. Took me forever to get HL2 to work properly as a result, and they're fine together now. Even if I couldn't, though, it's still not worth removing the fix for one game...

I thought I'd toss this in... using the same sources for stats, and not updating them as they're currently about the same as they were.

Player statistics of this moment (bf taken from gamespy, cs from steam):

    CS: Source

    12,207 servers, 22,734 players

    Battlefield 2 Demo

    2170 servers, 25,283 players
    Counter-Strike

    40,031 servers, 60,920 players

    Counter-Strike Condition Zero

    6,617 servers, 9,439 players

Together that makes 46,648 servers with 70,359 players still playing old-school CS. Even the newest hottest BF2 demo isn't coming remotely close to totals from CS. Even if you added in all the players of BF1942 and BFV, you still only bump your number up by about 4k.

So in a nutshell, while the release of a hot new demo might be able to compete with CS:S for a while, the reigning champion of popularity is, has long been, and likely will remain CS for quite some time to come.

Probably not at first, but since the full version will be more complete, and probably just all around better than the demo, alot of people will buy it. I don't think anyone expected BF2 to beat out CS 1.6, and I don't see any game doing that in the near future.

Though I definitely like BF2 more than CS:S, it's not really fair to compare the two. They're wildly different games.

Alright, I've been playing this a lot and it owns. Here's a few tips for everyone else:

Voicecom only works for squads. If you're a commander or squad leader, you can communicate via V key to your commander or squad leaders. If you're in a squad (including squad leaders), you can use B key.

If you're not in a squad, you just suck, press capslock to join/make/manage your squad, you can even customize the name, lock it so others can't join, and invite other teammates to your squad. The commander owns, he's got like maphack of a sort, but in order for him to give orders (or accept requests for UAV, etc), or use voice com with you, you have to be a squad leader (or at least in a squad with a good squad leader).

A few tips for being the commander:

Press capslock to open your commander console, you should use this often, maybe even go hide somewhere and use it constantly instead of playing, if your team doesn't need you otherwise. Scan will scan the map (only you can see it). Artillery will kill every infantry unit in a very small area but it's delayed, it also seems to have bad accuracy on rooftops and such and if they're in a vehicle or building it won't help against them much (especially tanks). Best for shooting crowded enemy spawnpoints or campers or afks, also snipers on rooftops because they normally don't move much either. Also, if your team has the enemy 'held off' so they're not advancing or retreating, artillery rocks then, too. Owning 5-9 people (or more) with artillery is great, but beware, aiming it poorly will get you teamkills and most servers will kick/ban you for too many teamkills.

UAV will put enemies on your team's radar for a short time, UAV owns, squads love it, and be sure to take out your enemy's UAV ASAP. And supply drop will do the following things: Heal people near it, Repair anything near it (vehicles/command buildings/artillery/etc), give ammo to anyone near it. Supply drops own and a commander can repair his own stuff (like artillery/UAV) by supply dropping on it.

To aim artillery and supply drops, I strongly suggest clicking where you want on the map, zooming to the third level, and aiming very precisely. You can also use this level of zoom to tell your squad leaders EXACTLY where the enemy is "BEHIND THAT BUILDING! GO! GET HIM! WATCH OUT, TANK BEHIND YOU!" You can zoom in like this even if your scan/UAV trailers are taken out, but it works better with a UAV going over that area at the same time.

Q is great for radio calls and T owns for commander/squad leader/squad members. Capslock is great for giving orders, right click the map and select orders, in normal playing mode you can also point with your crosshair and use T (if it's in sight). For instance if you want a UAV right where you are, look at the ground, hold T, and either give it (if you're a commander) or ask for it (if you're a squad leader). Same for supplies.

A few things about vehicles, pretty much every vehicle I like to press C once (and only once) to get a better camera view. Is there any way to set this as the default view for that vehicle? Wish there was.

Flying is hard, people recommend joystics but here's the trick. The mouse will TILT you, NOT turn you, to turn you have to use the A/D keys. W will speed you up, S will slow you down. Flying's pretty fun, I'm getting pretty good with copters and occasionally I can make a kill with jets, but I haven't been able to land a jet yet, I always have to eject.

That's all the tips you probably need right now, the rest can be found from instructions in-game.

Here's a few questions that I need answered, though:

How does the commander change his kit and spawn point while still alive? The capslock button opens his commander console, not the kit/squad console, unless he's dead.

Is there any way to turn off automatic spawning before you choose a new kit and spawn point? What does 'auto ready on' do anyway?

Above all, where can I report bugs and suggestions? For instance, the Kit/Squad tabs are so close to the change team tabs I occasionally switch teams by complete accident, which sucks when I'm commander and we're a minute or two away from winning.

Press your 'enter' or 'return' key to open the kit/spawn menu as the commander. You never played the old bf? I think auto-ready is the auto-spawn, but dont quote me on that.

I'm an old school flight sim guy -- stick, throttle and pedals -- and nothing is lamer to me than flying with a mouse (except, possibly, WC3 in CS). However, nothing also spells instant death in BF faster than trying to fly with a joystick.

I suppose that with a sh*tload of tweaking you might be able to get a stick not to over or under control but in a game like this, where flight is almost incidental and the maps are too small for air-to-air combat anyway, I regretfully resort to using the mouse. Takes all the joy out of it but it's better than not flying at all.

The flying missions in Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault were a nightmare for the same reasons.

I can fly 10meters off the ground in the attack helicopters, dodge in between trees, and pick off people along the way.. with mouse and keyboard. I don't even want to try a joystick, mouse and keyboard rule. Once you figure out how to fly, it's cake from there.

I also just discovered that while in helicopters, not pressing W, A, S, or D lets you hover. I had wondered if you could do that for awhile, never guessed it'd be so obvious.

Too bad I only have a FX5200 on a barrowed computer, GTA:SA and Source for it . If you do get a FX5200 and such lower types of cards to work with BF2, PunkBuster MIGHT detect it as a video hack, Such as Wall Hacking and other types relating to this. I wish I had money to get a new computer and wish my Summer Job List came so I could get a job.

I still play BF42 and the DC and DCX mods, I love them. I also love doing Speed Loops in the Littlebirds (Going super high into ther air then changing to the second seat and wait abit then change back to and recover and fly with a gained speed. I also like to go into the high part of the air of the map with a SU-25(24?) (that part that forces you into a stall if you go to high but you can still thurst), I just go close to stalling then I direct my flight to the other base and then dive bomb it directly from above, destorying any aircraft taking off and it good for ships as well.

Its easy to fly copters 30 feet (1 Meter = 3 Feet) off the ground, its hard running people down, cause you flip sometimes . I can fly a copter about the height of a player's leg to their waist. Its also as fun to run people over in a jet, that can get even lower :P .

Love the Keyboard for Flying & Bombing, Love the Mouse for Aiming & Gunning. I would Joystick if I had a USB one, maybe.

                      I think what I posted was a rant .
