what do they mean by logging, i thought VAC1 always banned on the spot when the guy connects to the server.

As it's been said, logging to make sure they don't get any false accounts of cheating. That, and this may just be me, but I think it'd be more fun for the cheaters to think:

            Loading Security Module....

            Heh heh heh, stupid Valve.

            *shuts down CS*

            *starts Steam in the morning*

            Banned from Steam h4x0r!

            WHAT THE HELL?!?!

1 anti-cheat system that works for all games over 2 different engines.. Woow!! That's almost to good to be true..

How can VAC2 check both the old HL-engine & Source stuff? Double build-in checks or something??

VAC1 logs for cheats. If there is a cheat detected, you're kicked from the server IIRC. Then several days (or weeks) later, VAC does a mass-ban on people who were caught during that period.

Anyway, this is great news for both CS 1.6 and CS:S players alike! All you 'naysayers' need to stfu and wait for it to be implemented, seriously. Can't judge a book by its cover. Yes, we know Valve is late on getting VAC2 out, but at least they're trying. It could be much worse. God forbid, they stop giving us free updates and a free anti-cheat tool. You guys expect too much from them.

Linux can run source by using Cedega, but you probably already know that.

it's possible, but it'll never happen. Id software 4 life. why did cs have to be a half-life game? fuck.

That was beautiful. :) First time I've literally laughed out loud over something here on CSN in a long time...

Probably is too good to be true. :P Really, though, is it all that amazing? It's like "whoah, people make drivers that work for Win9x AND WinXP?!? Amazing!" You can have different code paths for each game looking for different stuff, with some detections in common. We'll see how effective it is, though. Hopefully VALVe learned from the past failures of VAC and won't make some of the same mistakes.

Well, either that, or Gabe is remembering his time back at Microsoft, and soon Steam will be your operating system. Try to install those hacks now!

On a side-note... I haven't been able to log into Friends for at least a month now... is it down for everyone (again) or has anyone else been able to connect?

I think you guys are being way too optimistic about Valve, I sincerely doubt they're logging cheaters now. Remember this is Valve we're talking about.

Also no one has said a word about logging cheats, so stop believing all the rumors. If anything, the rumor was started by a bunch of fanboys at the steam forums to scare cheaters for the time being. I know Valve can log cheaters, I'm just saying I doubt that's the case here.

even if they did they cant ban m.. i mean them until they actually SAY vac2 is on in this server and cheaters will be banned. (thats what the insecure/secure filters are for)

Agreed. And wouldn't the server ops need to know about it and enable something for that? There would need to be something server side. I think its a bunch of bs.

I suppose its possible that one of the updates had something...
