VAC2 Testing Soon

The Valve Anti-Cheat for the Source engine, known as VAC2, will begin BETA testing next week. Open up Steam to get the weekly message. Here's the relevant part:

Next week we'll begin beta testing the new Valve Anti-Cheat system. For people playing multiplayer games, there will not be any visible difference while we're conducting the beta, but we will be logging cheating violations into our database to make sure it's ready for general release. This will be the last public notice before the system is released and active for everyone.



If you have any cheats for multiplayer games installed on your computer, now would be a good time to uninstall and stop using them. When a cheat infraction is detected, the offender will be permanently banned from playing on secure servers.

I give it less than a seven full days before there are work arounds for programmers to produce new cheats and hacks and obselete VAC2.

If it's anything like when the orignal, vac2 will calm the rampant cheating, there will be a war between them, update vac, update cheats, update vac.... and of course there will always be those 'private' cheats that are never released and detected. But as is life.



Honestly though, it should be a step forward because

a: it will make less people moan (or more if it doesn't work :p)

b: some may find it a hastle to have to update their cheats

and

c: some may just outright be afraid of getting banned



I mean I use a hack *wait wait stop hating me* OFFLINE when checking out peoples demos to better spot the cheaters. And I REALLY don't want to accidentally get perm banned for that, know what i mean? So I guess I'll just rely on vac2 to do it's job :)

Any clue on whether v2 will carry the ban list on from v1, that is something they couldnt do when we went from WON to Steam

I wouldn't have informed cheaters on "uninstalling" cheats... I would just turn on the system and watch them burn ... MUAHAHAHAHA!!!111!1

The thing about that is it gives hack makers and websites the advantage of knowing if a hack is detected or not. Currently VAC will ban you a few days-weeks after it spots a hack so its hard to tell if one certain cheat is VAC proof.
