    Interview with Gabe Newell

A Spanish Half-Life fan site, Half Rules, has recently conducted an interview with Valve's Gabe Newell. The interview runs the gamut from the future of the Half-Life series to the new ATI levels.
What can you tell us about the ATI maps? From what we know, it sounds like a pack of VERY detailed maps that'll take full advantage of our video card, could you give us more info on that?

I'm working on a presentation on these maps describing what we were trying to accomplish (sort of a "Making of ..." piece). This should answer your questions.
Though Gabe remains fairly tight lipped about many things, the interview is still worth a read, and may answer a few questions you had about what Valve is planning.

What will be amusing is when Nvidia Cards run the maps better than ATI Cards or as usual, ATI users have some sort of mysterious FPS issue because they have the incorrect . version of whatever drivers they are supposed to be using and even when they do run the drivers that optimise the experience for these maps (which will still be slower than an Nvidia Card anyway) it will screw everything else up! :)

                  I'm sorry what?

Currently it seems Nvidia is stepping up the game in the DX9 area but one year ago, who was on top? Oh right ATI. So with simple deduction, since the game was still in development at the time, they optimized it for the best on the market.

Nvidia, one year ago completely sucked. They're only good card at the time, can't even run HL2, properly, still, but now there's actually a competition in the market. Surprise, surprise.

Valve COULD have made the game run better on Nvidia hardware from last generation. It IS powerful enough. Just look at how well Nvidia's "crappy" hardware, the FX line of cards, runs Doom 3 compared to the "superior" ATI hardware back then.

All the crap about Nvidia cards being bad in DX9 is false. I had a 5900SE/XT and it got 5500 3Dmark 03's. And all those tests were done in DX9! Fact is every company that failed back then to make the games run good on Nvidia hardware were using each other's benchmarks as excuses.

Yeah it'll be like all those "nVidia: the way it's meant to be played games" that run better on ati cards. Ati cards have some mysterious issues with running 1.6 which doesn't really make sense.
