Who knows maybe it's already in with this update...

It might be working right now just like a virus-scanner would do, waiting for the cheats to be activated, catching them and logging all violations. Or atleast hopefully some protection will be added globally at steamlevel and while being ingame uses some extra scanning methods/functions in addition to detect cheats.

It would make sense if there also was some api for mods so they can decide if they want to have them VAC enabled or not.

Ok, enough of the speculations... Nice to see VAC for source finally.

It was probably already updated. Obviously if they told us in advance that there was an update soon, people wouldn't cheat for a few weeks to make sure.

edit: To be honest, Valve isn't that great with surprises.

i don't know about you but i personally think PB sucks. maybe it has more to do with the nature of hax on the Quake3 engine, but pb never seems to stop hackers on q3 or et. oh, and it updates about as quickly and as reliably unlocking hl2 on the release day.

I second that. I hated PB but thats just me. I wish Valve would make the VAC enable without telling people just to ban them and we can all laugh as they cry about their $50-100 game they just lost!

I personally don't mind Valve warning the hackers that the pain is on the way. An ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, and all that jazz. The hacking stops sooner than it would have this way.

Really, if they stop hacking today out of fear or stop hacking after the penalty for being caught wears off, they're not cheating anymore either way. Yeah, I'm sure we all get a nice, warm fuzzy from the thought that the hackers get kicked around (or at least slapped on the wrist), but in the end if what you want is a level playing field, we get that either way, and a warning way ahead of schedule gets it accomplished sooner.

(Plus, the people they catch after they've given out a warning are the diehard, "I don't give a flarg" kind of hackers that really deserve to get blown into oblivion.)
