Got to love the people who are crying about how their game doesn't work when the solution has been posted multiple times already.
I'm just going to take a quick peek at it and then I'm off to bed.
Edit: Sadly the fix didn't work for me. Oh well, good luck to Valve at getting the problem sorted out, obviously it's not affecting anyone. For those who are having troubles: chill out, they'll have it fixed soon enough. I'll try again in the morning.
The steam://validate/220 fis didnt do anything for me. Running HL2 first didnt work. I havent, however, tried to play the deathmatch so Im downloading that right now and hopefully that will cure it.
Right, you try building a program that can deal with the burden of hundreds of thousands of players at once, and you try configuring the network and you try dealing with all the pricks that cant wait two seconds for something to be released. Then you will see how VALVe is coping.
Since people are paying for service without interruption, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect service without interruption. I think it's awesome that Valve has released so much tonight, but it's obvious that a large HL2 engine bug slipped through the cracks. Valve's a very cool company but I think in this case they definitely deseve to be attacked by people who can't play HL2 SP or CS:S. They're customers, not whiners.
I think the issue here is that "real" patches require a publisher testing system. Steam patches don't require publisher approval, and likely have a less stigent QA process. Combine that with the fact that it's impossible to bypass patches released on Steam and you have two strikes against quality assurance. If Valve wants publisher independence, they need to make sure that things like support and QA are handled in-house effectively.
I think Valve screwed up. It really sucks when they screw up, because I really wish the gaming community at large was more supportive of the company and mistakes like this just fume more anger at the company. Because I have deep respect for Valve Software and its employees, I seriously hope they improve their practices a bit so that Steam at large and Half-Life 2 itself foster a large community of happy gamers.

yes i dont think you can compare other game companies to valve being that valve has to deal WAY more users
They took it upon themselves to increase their greed and control over WHO plays their game with steam.
That being said, their network is handling it great, I think, everyone obviously got the patch because now the game wont even start for most people. And if steam were as great as they say, my platform would be updating with a fix as we speak. You dont release a patch that completely downs the product and then call it a night.
And take the steam forums offline so nobody can get an official word on shit.
Who are you to say how well-liked Steam is? I'm an "average player" and I like it quite a lot. I have no problem with Valve trying to crack down on piracy, as well as earn a greater portion of the profits from their games. If you mean that the majority of gamers don't like Steam, provide some statistics to back it up or shut up.
You do not know that HL2DM isn't working for "most people." Very few gamers come on to forums to say, "hey look, my product works perfectly!" The majority of forum posters does not equal the majority of players.
Furthermore, the reason your platform isn't updating a fix right now is that they probably haven't found the source of the problem yet. I mean think pal, not everyone is having the problem, which means it's going to be tough to track down. I think it's fairly obvious that the Steam forums are almost certainly down to save the bandwidth during the update, especially if there's a known problem and they don't want to be swamped with complaints. If anything, the forums being down should help them get a fix out sooner.
You've got this nifty brain in your head, try using it before you post.
Edit: Good post rizzuh, I'm going to withholdjudgement for the depth of Valve's error until I've seen how long it takes them to correct it. Excellent points about quality control though. G'night, all.
In any case, I just wanna play my $40 game before I go to sleep and after an hour of trying various things to make it go its still fucked, so bravo Valve.
