That's not what Sn00py was referring to. He was explaining that it would not be fair to ban by Ip becasue New IPs are assigned, so somone who got banned via IP will get 'unbanned' when it changes, and the person who recieves that banned Ip will then become banned.
Doesn't mean they can't trace who had a particular IP at a particular timeThortok2000 wrote..
Your entire argument is flawed, becasue valve never gave the key out, they just traced/tagged the accounts which used that well-known key.
No, this is like going to Wal-mart, pre-ordering a game, and then the week before they put it on the shelves, when it's sitting in the back of the store, someone says "meet me out back and I'll give you a copy of it" and you do and you play it and then when the game is 'released' you say "But I've already got a copy of it, thanks" and then they ban you.
The idea here is that you are not hacking valve...they hacked themselves and gave the CD key or whatever to the internet. YOU did nothing wrong...especially if you bought the product. If valve (and whoever else is involved, like publishers) weren't so insistent on delaying the game when it's already available to be played, and if people weren't impatient, and if Valve didn't capitalize on that impatience by releasing this CD key/hack/whatever, none of this would've happened.
I mean, I'm assuming that there would've been some amount of pirating that went uncaught (and still did/does). Valve's releasing a CD key like this caught people who would not have pirated otherwise...they wouldn't've found a key to use. And if they /would/ have found another key to use...who says they haven't? /They're/ just uncaught.
Catch hackers, cheaters, whatever. Just don't tempt them into it and then blame THEM for being tempted.Comment

I agree with ya completely. I was a bit scared because last night I had tried to purchase HL2 but had forgotten the balance on my card was negative *whops*. Anyways my Steam account works fine
I hate how some humans (I use that term losely) love to see others misery for their own enjoyment.
Personally I'd prefer to see all the people who go round saying "hahahahahahaha you got banned", get banned themselves so we don't have to put up with twats while we play. Mind you why am I saying this on a CS site to a bunch of 13 year old kids with no morals? :/
Love that Onos btw :)Comment

If you already own the game you can't install a 2nd version of that game on the same account. I don't see how its stealing to try the validation key in that specific circumstance. You will not receive anything you have not paid for. You have stole nothing.

Ummm what??? Some people tried to enter the key and it most likely gave them a "key in use" error and then they went on to legally purchase the game. Yet, they attempted to steal it and now their account is banned. Im happy.

Kind of do pity those who did lose their account even though they did buy HL2 in the end.
We are in a way a society of semi-educated consumers. Some of us want to know what we are getting before hand so we don't waste money on something we really won't need/use. We want to touch it, shaking it, kick it, watch it, or listen to it before we pull out the checkbook. At times though, buying a video game that had no public beta is like buying a car without a test drive.Comment

I have ordered the game yeasterday your ass! If you dont buy HL2, then u are not a real player. Test is something. But i havnt even seen HL2 on my screen. Thats the thing!
Yohn if you were able to play that game forever what are the chances that you would buy it?? Probably very low. You got what you deserved.
I just f***ing rote a key, that was already in use. I thought.Comment

It doesnt matter. You attempted to play something that you didnt legally buy. Its your damn fault. I bet you got an "key is in already in use" error right???
Is there no one on the god damn site that belives me!!?!??!!
Why get banned, when you havnt even seen HL2.
SO UNFAIR!Comment
