That's true. I'm up here in Canada and my ISP out East here recently (like 2 years ago) changed their broadband to a PPPoE system which as another user described will assigne you an ip, if you have the same ip for a could of days, it will boot you and assigne you a new one. But yes, the ISP does keep records of who owned the ip at every point, so if the authorities demand it, they can trace you down no matter when you did it. That's my two cents on the dynamic ip thingy.
So Valve cannot simply call your internet provider and ask which account was aasociate with it at what time.

It doesnt matter about your ISP, its steam that knows what IP is connected and so on. Any website that you go on or for that matter gaming server you go on records your IP and anybody can trace it.
Plus I find it great that they did this and the people that are complaining it isnt right well just need to realize that stealing is stealing.

no dude, i dont think that valve can actually find the people using the emporio version. also, if the person using that has read this, or any other news of the mass banning, they would just use a fake account with nothing on it to use the cracked version.
and ziggie, if you bought the game, it means you can do whatever you like with your copy of the game as long as you dont distribute it for free/profit, and you dont steal their work. you can change it as much as you want as long as you keep it on your own comp.Comment

I haven't even seen HL2 in my screen and I get band because my friend told me that i could use that Key to play? I Just typed it on my comp and it said that it was already in use. Some people are clueless. Never does it state that Valve released a CD-key or a hacked version. It states they were tracking. The illegal copies were already there from the stolen code or when someone cracked the algorithm. Possibly Valve is doing what most software pirates are doing and just searching the Internet for HL2 and then seeing what means they are using to install it and looking for that. Doesn't sound like too many of the 20,000 will actually be affected. They will just go back to using their real steam accounts. But at least it's an effort. Now if they can just crack down on the hacks being used then things will be better.Comment

Pretty stupid analogy. If you buy 1 car then steal the same model car you end up with 2 cars!! If you try to use the CD Key exploit when you already own HL2 you end up with 1 copy of HL2. You haven't stole anything.
Disable the accounts of the people that didn't buy the game and got something for nothing, but why ban the people who bought your game? Actively pissing off your paying customers just doesn't seem right to me.
Also can we stop with all the you broke the EULA rubbish. First of all this is unlikely to ever reach the lawyers since were talking about $50 and it wouldn't be worth the hassle, plus whether the EULA would stand up in court is very debatable.
What we are taling about here is Valves ethics, and them doing the right thing, theres no point getting down to the letter of the law as it will never come to that.
I bought HL2 then I saw that ATI key and was curious to see if it would work. Thankfully for me I decided not to use it incase of such a situation. I feel sorry for the people who made the wrong decision who had already bought HL2. Their curiosity got the better of them, and to them it didn't feel like they were stealing as they already owned the game.
If Valve wants to give them a nice christmas present they should unban them, seeing as they themselves will be buying presents for their families with the money of some of the people they banned.Comment

An EULA is a legal agreement. It will stand up in court. Plus you agreed to it thats like signing your divorce papers and then all of the sudden you read it and dont like whats in them. Wont work. You already signed it.
Sure some peoples legit games got banned but who the hell cares?!?!? They tried to steal the game and they are getting punished for it. Maybe it will teach them something next time, like if you are going to steal a game use a new account. HAHAHAH DumbassesComment

I hate how some humans (I use that term losely) love to see others misery for their own enjoyment.
Personally I'd prefer to see all the people who go round saying "hahahahahahaha you got banned", get banned themselves so we don't have to put up with twats while we play. Mind you why am I saying this on a CS site to a bunch of 13 year old kids with no morals? :/Comment
