Oh, holy christ. Can you bitch anymore?

      Just relax. They'll fix it.
I mainly agree with this response to anybody posting about how bad Steam is. Unfortunately, in this situation, I think he does have space to bitch, as does everyone else. Basically, what is happening is people bought the game (like myself), they preloaded/installed and it's now taking a very long time for them to be able to play (if they are lucky enough to get onto the Steam servers. This is something that Valve should have obviously had the vision to see was gonna happen. This is really a blunder by Valve somehow not being prepared for millions buying their game, installing, and then needing their files unlocked. They should have definitely beefed up the bandwidth or added more servers for a few days. Their mistake, you really can't blame the people angry about not being able to play a game they payed at least $55 for.

I just thought I would mention...they only reason it seems like a common problem.....is because only the people that have a problem post.....it's like that for most games. If they work, you have less problem posts and well I'm sure you can all put two and two together.

My game arrives in a day or two, I much prefer having a physical copy in my hands over a downloaded copy.

we are bitching cause we have been waiting to play the game, and we can't even get on our Steam accounts. You lucky few have been signed in steam and can play at any time, so stfu. We have been waiting for 5+ years, and when it is already on our DAMN computer (all the files and pictures and sounds and etc.) but we can't execute the game and run it because of valve's stupid distribution program that is stupid as horse crap, we get pissed. If I can look at my hl2.exe file in my hl2 folder, but I'm not able to play it because: 1.) Offline mode obviously doesn't work for steam anymore, even though I had my HL2 unlocked and validated this morning at 3, however my computer crashed and whatnot, so I had to restart and now I can't log back in! Wonderful! Thanks steam, thanks valve. If you made HL2 an exception to the online validation process, this would have been much easier, regardless of piracy and bull crap. How about all of those people with 28.8k modems, or their internet is usually not working? However, they bought the CD's because they wanted to be able to play this single player phenomenon immediately. Sadly, to their dismay, VALVe effs them in the A because you need to validate through the INTERNET! HOORAY FOR VALVE!

Steam is better than WON. Servers got overloaded. So what? Get over it! Steams up again now. It is on mine anyway. Sh*t happens.

Stop bitching just because every single little inconvenience in your life causes your panties to bunch up in a knot.

Wow, nice rant, too bad it sucks. My steam has worked without issue, I launched it this morning and it immediatly started unlocking and validating. Took about 8-10 min to complete and I was playing. I then downloaded HL:S in like 30 min, and that was that. I can always use offline mode. If you have your internet connection plugged in, then it will always try and connect to the steam servers. Simply unplug your net and offline mode should work without issue. (As long as you told it to remember your password). Also, people with 28.8Kbp modems will have no problem unlocking files, shouldn't take them too long. Plus, most people who have rocking computers that can play HL2 will have faster modems then 28.8, come on, be real. But I leave you with a simple invite: please design a system like steam that works all the time. If you cannot do it, then shut your mouth please. Don't knock what you can't do yourself.

Actually, to be honest, finding, downloading, and installing pirated software (while remaining ad- and virius-free) is just about as hoop-filled as the legal way.

Plus, the legal way, I usually have tech support I can call up, and someone to blame things on when things fail.

The only time I'd pirate any software would be when it was something I would own legally if I could.

Like Windows XP. If I ever get my laptop fixed (the computer I'm on now can't run it), I'll pirate Windows XP (if I can) up until I have the money to buy it at which point I'll probably format my laptop and install the 'real' Windows XP.

I also own bootleg movies until a DVD counterpart is available in stores, as my personal rebellion against the insane amount of time for DVD counterparts to BE available in stores. The same for temporary downloads of some movies...since I can't 'rent' them for home viewing.

Anyway, as far as Half-Life 2 goes, chances are by the time I have a computer to run it, I'll be able to afford it. I'll play through it once, probably cheating to do so (so I can see the storyline) and then I'll go back to CS:S.

Thanks for the screenshots Urban Terror. I was considerably under-impressed. -.-
No offense, but if you think installed a pirated copy is more complicated than installing a "Real" copy, no wonder you need the tech support. Most of the time btw a pirated copy is an exact image of the game's cd(s) so it wouldn't be any different than installed in fro mthe "real" cds, other than online modes mostly wont work.

Also its pretty easy to tell if a copy is real or not, ie. if its a 100mb download and its called HL2, you gotta know that somethings up.

I was surprised how it only took 'them' a few hours to crack HL2, i figured it be at LEAST a couple of days to get by steam. But then again, xp was cracked in an hour.

Is the standard one silver or bronze?? I don't know which one to get since I only saw two kinds, collectors and a standard one.

just wondering before I go out and buy this thing, can you play it without a net connection once you have activated it, etc.??? Because I wanted to install it on my beefy laptop to take with me on holiday etc. but if I can't play it on the plane, hotel room, etc. without a net connection it's pretty useless...

Also here in oz there's a lot of people who can't even get a phone line let alone a net connection, being 200kms away from the nearest exchange...what can they do?

Don't get me wrong, for a multiplayer game I might understand (even though some want to play on LAN only) but for a single player only experience, those without a net connection have only these sorts of games to look forward to.

The version you buy in stores is Bronze. The collectors ed is the Gold package as far as I can tell. The Silver is an Internet only offer.

Vlux: The basic edition from stores just gives you CS:S and HL2. Silver on steam gives you the same but with DoD:S and HL:S. The collector's edition has some other stuff in it but I dont know what it is. You wont find the silver or gold packages in store. You can only get those through steam.

Hopefully I'll have the thrill of playing HL2 as soon as my new graphics card arrives...and I'm so broke >

Now quit reading this and go beat the game! :P
