Lawsuits per each Best Buy that sold it early I believe. I sincerely hope that Valve carries through with that, despite how it may sour relations in the future if they wish to sell through BB again.

Probably both. Valve's game, VU's retail boxes/CD's/DVD's. They both stand to gain a ton of cash.

Not really fair to blame best buy completely, I would blame the stores software vendor first. Problem is they just fire the employee and act like thats the source of the problem. Like I said in my post I was told BY MY BOSS who was told(or so he says) by our vendor to sell it. If I had and ANYONE was to be fired it would be me. For doing what I was told. But its so easy to fire a part time kid and be done with it, instead of challenging the management/higher-up positions. Pisses me off sometimes...But if I didn't play half-life and hadn't been following HL2 all along I wouldn't have known any better, I would prob be fired now. If our vendor actually told my boss to sell it, she's at fault. The big chains don't really care about release dates. If a game comes in they just put it up. They don't know how serious the street date violations might be. They don't know it's a big game. As far as my boss knows hl2 is just as big a deal as say winnie the pooh teaches abc's or whatever. The management doesn't play games so they don't differentiate between any of them. It's just another software box. But the vendors tell the department manager about street dates and what the games are about, and all the pertinent info. But the dept manager doesn't care, he doesn't play games. It's like someone taking you aside for 15 minutes and explaining the difference between 20 different urinal cakes and which have low fragrances and which are highly acidic and which stain the urinal, etc. You don't care! You just want them to shut up and go away. It's the same when it comes to the software vendors. Usually my boss just tells them to talk to me because I follow all that stuff (I mean the games, not the urinal cakes lol). And then I report back to him. But they usually come in in the morning, and I usually work in the evening. That was the case when they brought in HL2. So I didn't get a chance to talk with the vendor.

Sorry that was very long-winded but I wanted to get it off my chest so you guys have a better understanding of what happens in retail chains, and why something like this always seems to happen. It's not as simple and black/white as that they are very greedy, and don't care about the law(s). Its misunderstanding mixed with complacence mixed with irresponsibility.
