i just dont trust steam to keep my cdkey and login information. if they mess something up with my account it would be a big pain to contact them and get it fixed.
First of all, they don't "mess" with accounts for no reason. The only reason something would happen to your account is if you were doing credit card exploits, cheating, or some other exploit that was illegal. If you don't trust steam, what the hell do you trust?

If you reinstall, just login to Steam with the account you had before. Even if you did have a hard copy of the cd-key, you wouldn't be able to use it in two separate accounts, so what's the point?

Your CD-Kay is tied to your account, which is tied to your login through steam, which in turn is ultimately tied to your email address. As long as you don't lose that, you will be able to recover and reinstall at any point, at any time, for any reason. You could even go to a friend's house without bringing any CDs, install steam, login with your username, and immediately begin downloading and ultimately playing CS:S, HL2, or whatever on that computer.

As long as you are logged in to Steam under an account you registered and either bought HL2 through Steam or entered in a store-bought HL2 cd-key, you have unlimited access to download, download, download at your heart's content.

i have no point. i was just asking questions. i was actually thinking of moving my mail from yahoo mail to google mail. i didnt know how that would work with the steam account (since steam uses the email address for the account name). i guess i should've just been more specific, eh.

edit: sorry, i didnt mean to hijack the thread. just ignore me

there really is not point in ahving a hard copy of cs:s

but there plenty of reason to have a hard copy of hl2, i save all my boxes and i have a stack of all my jewel case games, a nice hl2 one would be nice to add to the collection.

I guess you can say its worhless but i think its cool to have the jewel case.

I have an ati cupon so ill be getting it on steam, but ill buy a boxed version eventually

I collect game boxes. Ugh, I have a crap load of them. I have some on my computer desks and some folded down in storage boxes, hah. :) but there isn't real big point to it, I guess.
