      HAHA, OWNAGE!

I got something even better than that...

My friend made a model of a T that is Gabe Newell, looks just like him, but in a crappy CS state ... We've killed Gaben Newell, ohhh 600+ times now just in this day... Its such great fun, because that shows how pissed off we are at him for not giving HL2 people YET!

hey, doom3 might have real mapping and uber polygons but its just too bad you run around the whole game shooting at dark spots while "catching up to" a squad of marines when half of the time they are in the room next to you.

The point is, I admit that doom3 has amazing graphics. Yet the game lacks game play, and mere common factors that aren't there that a game should have (shooting someone in the head 3 times does the same damage as shooting him in the leg 3 times?).

              Horrible review.

This guy is comparing the gameplay and a whole bunch of its elements of a game he has not even played. Furthermore he is basing all of this on simple videos released by Valve thats exploits the better parts of HL2.

                the real answers:

                DOOM 3 Tech:

                --------------

                - Open GL only

                - Uses both Normal Maps and Specular Maps for primary lighting calculations

                - Uses Shadow Volumes as the universal shadowing algorithm

                - all lights and shadows are dynamic

                - AI path finding uses AAS (area awareness system) technology used in Quake 3 (not much as changed)

                - level geometry is very similar to Quake 3 which uses regular polygon meshes and bezier patches for curved surfaces

                Half Life 2 Tech

                ---------------

                - DirectX only (windows only)

                - Uses specular, normal, light, and albedo maps

                - uses "radiosity normal mapping"

                - world shadows are precomputed light maps and players are projected shadows

                - from videos it seems the world is deformable

                - support for high dynamic range lighting

                Comparison

                -----------

                Lighting

                --------

HL2 seems to have more complex and mixed lighting system than doom. Even though all of Doom's lights are calculated in real time all the light is a result of "direct" light which means the scene is either all dark or all bright. HL2 solves this by using radiosity calculations by taking into account light being reflected off several surfaces. Therefore, if there is a light in the corner of a room, the rest of the room will be visible due to the reflected light. The "radiosity normal mapping" is precomputed radiosity light values at different tangent vectors on a surface which means that the surface will emit a certain light value based on the radiosity value, your current eye position and the normal map curvature; it's highly efficient and there is no harsh dark to light areas

HL2 also has support for HDR (high dynamic range) lighting which produces a glowing effect when there is a bright object in a dark place.

Since HL2's lights arent dynamic in most places in the world, light maps are used for shadows which are precomputed and are highly efficient. The problem with light maps the shadows dont move. Moving occluders (players) cast dynamic shadows however but dont support self shadowing due to the fact that they are using projected textures which are can be low quality at times but can be used to create a soft shadow look. There are some problems by using static light maps for shadows and projected textures. for example, if a player in de_dust_source is sitting on a large box, the player's shadow seems to be floating in mid air. This is due to the non uniform lighting where the box's shadow is not as dark as the player due to the fact that they arent lit the same way.

Since doom3 is using a unified lighting/shadowing system, all shadows and lights are dyamically calculated which means it's slower but accurate. By using shadow volumes, a lot of calculations must be done on the CPU to generate the volume which means a large slowdown which cant be helped by your GPU. Also, the player models in doom must be low polygon due to the fact that the more polygons there are, the slower the shadow volume calculation becomes. The advantage to shadow volumes is that they support self shadowing and they are a 100% accurate representation of the player model. The disadvantage is that they are slow to compute and they cant used for soft shadowing without more volume calcuations.

the AI path finding in Doom uses the same tech as Quake 3 where the enemies dont need way points to get around but after playign the game there are still some pathfinding issues and the decisional logic isnt that advanced.

To sum things up, the two engines have branched in opposite directions in terms of lighting and shadow decisions. Theoretically, HL2 will run better and seems to be using old tech mixed with new tech. Doom 3 on the other hand settled for a unified lighting/shadowing system which fit their game very well but doesnt seem to be very scalable in terms of polygon counts in the scene which could be a bad decision due to the fact that it might not support a lot of games wishing to license a game engine.

I didn't enjoy Doom3 much, but people can express any opinion they want. It's not they randomly post "OMGZ DOOM3 IZ LYK TEH KEWLEST $H!7 EVAR D00DZ". The topic has just as much to do with Doom3 as it does HL2. Just because this is a CS (HL) site doesn't mean that the people posting can have no opinion about other games.

                          You fuck.

I played doom3 and beat it, not really what i had hoped for, very repetitive, no challenging puzzles, just a buch of stupid lockers, cept for the one you go to website to get the code that was cool. Graphics were good if there was more light, to much darkness, and switching from light to gun got really old after a while. Bosses were lame. The graphics were nice, specifically the shadowing and lighting were very nice. I have played hl2 and source, i think HL2 is goin to be alot better then doom3 first person wise, Source is a totally diff game, im not goin to compare it to doom3. HL2 wins hands down.

To everyone else who seems to dissagree with the article, try to be more constructive, and not act like a 14 year old who can cuss and swear, and be a dick cause he is on the internet. Its just and opinion.

Oh, it was obviously a very conscious decision -- just not an intelligent or tactically sound one. Check in on some of the lighting discussions over at AR15.com and see what real world law enforcement and military personnel have to say on the subject. If a supposed Marine showed up in a Doom 3 scenario the first thing he'd do would be to duct tape his flashlight to his weapon. Close Quarter Combat almost exclusively depends on being able to quickly and positively identify your targets -- How can you possibly shoot what you can't see?

"Here you are pouncing on Doom 3's rehashed gameplay, while at the same time trashing what is just about the only piece of innovation the game brings to the table."

That's not innovation, it's lazy design and lack of imagination. It's not as if the flashlight had a room-illuminating white phosphorous effect, it's still limited as hell and the handicap of not being able to use it simultaneously with your weapon is just a game designer's agonizing artifice.

"On topic: HL2 will probably, I suppose, be a better gaming experience than Doom 3. But fuck, I love those shadows."

As you're entitled to, but the forced Flashlight OR Weapon choice is unrealistic at best, retarded at worst. All moot, of course thanks to the user mods that rectify it.
