Again, we're comparing apples to oranges here. Both engines are meant for completely different styles of gameplay. Doom3 requires heavily on lighting and shadowing effects for the freaky gameplay. HL2 isn't a 1st person horror shooter.



Both engines have their ups and downs, but both are amazing in their own rights.

Futility and pointlessness of such comparisons aside, the real issue should be gameplay. For all its alleged bells and whistles Doom 3 is a big yawn, a by-the-numbers exercise in technology showcasing.



The levels are little more than the convoluted corridors of Dr. Who -- a limitation of the graphics overkill that prevents detailed open spaces -- and it's the same old "locked door, find the key; missing part, find the replacement" puzzle crap that masquerades as gameplay. Demons and zombies burst out of closets and enclosed areas as if they had nothing better to do than stand around in upright-coffin-like spaces waiting for you to wander past. Shine a light in a dark corner and it's empty. Turn around and something jumps out from there anyway.



And how stupid is being able to use either a weapon OR a flashlight, but not both simultaneously? Given the inordinate overall darkness of the game a tactical light strapped to your weapon (or even held in your other hand) is an absolute must and, fortunately, users have made several mods that correct this injustice.



Worst of all, though, IT'S NOT SCARY. I jumped a few times when steam lines burst or control panels collapsed, but aside from a few faceless (literally) and headless zombies the monsters and demons are appallingly unimaginative and predictable. As is Hell, itself.



You'd expect Hell to be totally unlike anything you've ever experienced -- disorienting, illogical and totally oppressive -- but not the Hell in Doom 3. It's mundane in the extreme, with boilerplate bits like pits of fire, floating chunks of firmament and legions of demons that spring out of nowhere. Up is always up, down is always down and gravity continues to follow its immutable laws.



Instead of scaring the bejesus out of you with a sense of hopelessness and oppression, Doom 3's Hell looks disappointingly like something human beings dreamed up. Which, of course, it is. It never felt like anything more than just another game level you could (and obviously would) get through. It SHOULD have felt like, "Oh my god, I might be stuck here forever! Did I do something wrong to end up here? What the fuck do I do now?" Instead it was, "Oh, the Hell level. Cool. Now, where's the exit?"



And the final lame-ass Boss Monster? Another 10-story-high demon with a rocket launcher melded to his arm. The Lord of Darkness needs hardware? ZZZZzzzzzzzz...



Anyone who's played Silent Hill 3 knows what scary and disturbing REALLY is, and what Hell must really be like. Plus, Best Buy is blowing it out at $9.99, as opposed to the $50+ id is demanding for Doom 3.



Based on the pre-release material Half-Life 2 looks like it could blow Doom 3 away gameplay-wise with one tentacle tied behind its back.

You know what I think? I think that all those people who talked trash about that article are retards and dont know the full story.. Why, there could be alot of reasons why he is right..



e.g.: Maybe he played HL2 leaked/hacked version AND THEN played D3. Of coarse hed like HL2 better becuase he was amazed by this new technology. And once he played enough, and got bored and wanted to play D3, he was already bored so he maybe didnt find the game that wll made.



e.g.#2: He acutally played two games and he thought HL2 is beter than D3, and thats that. You retards still have to remember that non of you played bug-free version of HL2, let alone play any version of HL2 (of caorse unless you played a hacked one), so you dont know whats what and maybe that he IS infact is right. Why, I played D3, and I thought it was awesome. The graphics, and everything else. And I think that the article is pretty accurate to point that he actually stated his evidence with screenshots.



And one more thing:



If you like your D3 so much, why the fuck are you here and not on D3 forums posting away how great the game is?



This article was just based off some guys point of view. Since the site was made in USA (which im 3516535435% positive) it applies to US constitution, and like in the first ammendment, there is freedom of speech. And since I live in US, i can tell you all to fuck yourselves you ignorant fucks. The guy can say what-ever-he wants and you have right to read it or not. If ou dont have anything nice to say about that article, then keep your mouth shut.

Some people hate DooM 3's low-poly models and hard-edged shadows.

Others still don't like Half-Life 2's bland lighting and lack of shadowing effects.
