All good sequals take years to make. GTA 3 was what 5 years after 2?? Who cares how long its been since the first one, we have only known about HL 2 for a year and a half.

It's worth remembering that years are not generally a good indication of game development. For example, often a game can spent years in dev, but only the last year or two may involve a 'complete' team. Initial stages may only involve a small group of people fleshing out the game design/architecture, project/finance/staff planning, technology etc.

That is to say that comparing one game against another in terms of years of development is generally a rather poor comparison. Different games are developed in different ways with different schedules and different resources over different periods of time.

(I just noticed that my comment isn't actually relevant so i should read posts properly next time bl;a blah blahbdmbmkd)

Exactly DaveJ. Some games can be in the thinking part of planning for years which apparently HL 2 was. Also it took almost two years alone to write the game engine. Many other games use other engines out there and thtas it but thats not good enough for Valve.

Neg, its been longer than a year and a half. Remeber them talking about TF2 on that one vid...then moving it over to the hl2 engine for development. I remeber seeing vids of TF2 and hearing things about it....years ago. So hl2 has had awhile im sure.

The Source Engine has been in development since around 2000. They worked on it all the way up until September 30, 2002.

At that point they cut everything that wasn't ready and said it'd be used in Half-Life 3.

So HL2 has only been in development for nearly 2 years. CS:Source? Who knows? I don't know when they started actually developing it, only when they started hyping it....
