just got a few things to say here, hopefully some of the more intelligent members of the board can back me up.

[break="the rest"]doom 3 is a good looking game, its gone all the way with the lighting which has left less power in the video cards for all the other stuff in the renderer. case in point being the low poly-ish models - bump and normal mapping cant totallytake away the feel of 'this model looks nice, but it looks a bit angular'.

the scope of hl2's graphics are much more grand. regardless of real-time on the fly lighting calculations (as opposed to hl2's mix of lightmaps and dynamic shadowing), hl2's open vistas and inner-city scenes and artwork blows me away a lot more than endless dark metal corridors, lifts and tunnels. in hl2 there is the variety of wide open spaces, coupled with the lovely inner-city and indoors scenes. shipyards, warehouses, apartment blocks, dried up oceans, abandoned ships and the omnipresent combine machine/tower impress me a whole lot more than the claustraphobic doom setting.

dont get me wrong, im sure the doom3 engine is excellent, and ill bet raven do some wicked stuff with it for quake4, but in terms of visuals as a whole, leaving aside the whole 'doom3 real time light0rings lolz!11' thing, hl2 gets my vote. its not just the engine, its what the artists and animators do with it that makes the visuals special.

case in point: Quake 3 vs CoD. Same engine, but I know which one impressed me more visually.
I can agree with you on all these points, especially after playing Doom 3 completely through once so far.

It's been stated time and time again that the Source engine can generate dynamic shadows and use dynamic lighting, it's just that out of the package Half-Life 2 will not make use of these features. Why? To keep the requirements down and make the game accessible to as many people as they possibly can.

These features, as well as others (SM3.0 support) can and probably will come around in due time with various Steam updates.

I won't even get into how much better the HL2 textures look compared to Doom 3's fairly low-res textures (in many areas).

because you and everyone like you on csnation don't do anything but whine.

            25 mods for doom3 in progress, 360 for half-life 2 in progress..and half-life 2 isn't even out. reference: http://topsites.moddb.com/

The best thing about a game, I think, is that it's easily customizable and moddable. Hell, i'll play a game for a month then just get bored with it. Half-life was the only exception because there were constantly mod teams creating mods for it and even still are today after 4-6 years. That, to me, is a winner in the gaming industry.

lol you would think that they could at least not make it look like TFC when people just explode like that.

                HL2 wins.....

unh I'm pro half life, but I have to say that after playing doom 3, half life 2 graphics are too outdated

on the plus side my computer should destroy this game and play at huge fps and res

I've never liked the dooms, I'm a half life fan boy, but doom 3's graphics beat half life's everywhere

the modeling and other features are a different story though, so for most of you who read this and freaked out, stop it, you're just confused and misinterpreted what I said.

                        Time for a sycophantic view.

I don't think it's really fair to announce that just because Doom 3 has some very unique and customised graphics capabilities, the Half-Life 2 engine is hence outdated. When id/Carmack designed their engine to look as good as it does, they also added some limitations - I doubt, for example, that the D3 engine can handle large open spaces and rolling terrain quite as well as Source, because that's what Source was designed with in mind. D3 was designed primarily to perform best on indoor/artificial environments. But because Source has to handle such a large variety of environments, it also has to restrict quite how much graphics processing it does. To do real-time lighting like D3 in the screenshots of HL2 I've seen would be a killer for most systems, as would having such amazing detail on the world and its characters. So really, D3 is quite heavy-handed in looking and acting realistic, whereas Source goes for more subtle approaches, like the expression technology - which after a while you'll stop noticing, but would notice if it were then to disappear.

D3's gameplay is designed around the dark atmosphere and the lack of visual data it feeds you. HL2's gameplay is almost the opposite - your exposure should make you feel uncomfortable.

Remember the games are selling themselves on different levels. They're both FPS's, so they are really competitors, but that's where it stops. D3 is designed and marketed as an action game to entertain and scare you - it's driven by getting you scared and tense. HL2 (I believe) is designed and marketed more as an action/story/adventure. Sure it'll have tense exciting moments, hopefully for most of the game, but it's a different approach and a different style.

Comparing D3 and HL2 are like comparing 'Spooks'/'MI-5' to '24'. Same subject area, but very different programs with some common features.

It's all been said before, but it's worth saying again :) HL2 is certainly not dead yet.

Wait until both games are out and lets see what sort of mods are around 6 months later...

Really, I don't understand why all of you doom 3 guys are trying to compare HL2 to.. Doom 3. There nothing alike.. Yeah its Doom, but what I saw of them game, the graphics look to smooth in my opinion..Like.. creamy sort of.. not my bag of chips.

HL2 graphics look more crisp and pretty.

Both of the games have different plots to them. So the only thing you can really compare to the two is that there both FPS's and maybe some of the physics.

What's really funny though, is everyone that is complaining right now. Is going to go out and buy HL2, you know you will. It's almost like I said I was never going to buy CZ but I went out a bought it anyway. I think they have improved on HL2 a lot since the first time it was announced.. I have faith in VALVe and the games they create. There's no reason to get all mad over them delaying a game, because thats what game companies do, VALVe is not the first.

Anyhoo, Doom 3 again is probably not a bad game based on its story, gameplay. But as for the graphics, they are a bit to smoothen to me.. And Doom 3 is a bit dark for my taste in a game.

I have high hopes for HL2, and I believe it will be released soon enough. Even if they decide to delay it after the day they say its going to be released, doesn't matter. I don't think it will kill anyone to wait 5 days or even 10 more. Really its just when it turns into months, years is what gets me..heh..

                          :)

I'm just curious what all the Doom3 fanboys are going to do once they beat it. Beat it again? Sounds fun man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doom3 is definitely really cool... for what it is. I'm very glad I didn't pay for it and a friend let me borrow it. Returned it to him the next day after beating it. It was fun, but where's the replay value? Where's the hook? Multiplayer is worthless. Three of us getting killed by the same person over in very similar looking maps got old very quick.

If you really really like the dark, pay for Doom3. If you want to play a really cool game, just borrow it.

HAHAHAH entro thats so true man. I mean there is so many times you can play a game before its just boring again.

If Doom 3 didnt have those awesome graphics it would be a huge flop. Face it thats all the game has.

IGN gave if horrible reviews for gameplay (saying it hadn't changed) but because of the pretty graphics they gave it a merciful 8.9 overall score.

Yes those are new high resolution pictures, there were crappy e3 videos before. I even remember the sound that helicopter makes when the bullets go whizzing by you and thought it was amazing. But mostly everyone's complaining because these are new sequences in battle, but basically the same maps and look almost those of the e3 videos. I'm almost sure I saw that helicopter scene though on an e3 video
Thats right, except for the fact that I have all of the e3 videos archived on CDs and none of them have helecopters in them.
