It's funny all these people flaming Steam seem to not remember all the times WON came under attacks just like this and you couldn't play CS for extended periods of time.

I was going to quote a few people, but would end up being most of the people that posted. Is it quoted as an attack from someone who is pissed because they closed down WON? I'm to lazy to see when the first attaks came, but maybe it's just a bunch of regular assholes?
What exactly is a DoS attack? I know what DoS stands for, but I'm wondering how it would be done...guess I'm off to howthingswork.com heh.Comment

I don't recall these days ass I wasn't an avid Counter-Strike player... Probably because of my lack of computer skills at that time, getting into a server was a great moment of luck.

Maybe it was bad luck that "Quick Connect" always chose full, password protected and C-D required servers.
Steam really showed me the pleasure of Counter-Strike. In fact, it's the only game I play!DeSpiSe Me wrote..
DOS stands for "Denial Of Service"... The attack is formed by requesting a great ammount of replies from the server (example: pinging with big packets).

A website could get DOSed by reloading pages at impossible speeds.Boomstick wrote..
They probably have the same mission as myg0t has... Ruin the game.
I wonder what the idiots doing this seem to think they can accomplish. It seems like they're being dicks, just for the sake of being dicks.

Maybe it's a teenager that downloaded a DOS tool and thought that Steam was a great target to test out if it worked!Comment

People hate change.
I am well consent of how DOS attacks are formed. I'm just wondering why Steam and why was WON attacked only few times compared to Steam who, during the first year, has been attacked 3 or 4 times.
People are morons who enjoy it when others suffer.
Two big reasons in a nutshell right there.Comment

You got a point there... Exept Steam saved my life by letting me play Counter-Strike without having a few thoudsand times on the "quick Start" button.

What's really funny is reading some of the comments that Steam is vulnerable because, in their opinion, "Steam sucks".
People....Major multi-million dollar companies are vulnerable. EVERY company is vulnerable. Quite honestly, Steam keeps bouncing back from these attacks admirably well. Much better than Microsoft did when they were attacked..and I bet they have some serious firewalls in place for MSN etc.Comment

Kids are still whining about Steam?
Grow up.
Aside from the rough start Steam had it's fine now. WON went down a lot in it's day and Steam still doesn't go down as much as WON seemed to go. When WON went down it was down for quite a while and when Steam goes down it's back up pretty quickly. I think people seem to forget how much of a pain in the ass it was to get the old updates. The internet would be backed up and it would take about a day to download the new patch but with Steam it only takes a couple minutes.Comment

Yeah I love Steam as well. One of the greatest things I love about it is the out of game server listings that you can configure as you see fit. Great stuff.

Indeed. It also has better stability. The only thing that was slacking is the "friends" feature. I remember that it worked well during the Steam BETA but then started to malfunction shortly after the release of Counter-Strike 1.6
