    Steam's Downtime

Update: Steam's back up and running.

A forums' posting at Steampowered.com explains the reason for the recent Steam downtime.
There has been an external network event causing some pretty bad network problems for Valve today. The source is not clear at this time, however it is external to Valve's network. It's being worked on with our outside connectivity people to fix/shut down the problem.

Sorry for the inconvenience of it all. We'd love to flip a switch and fix it, but like I said, it's coming from the outside.

Obviously no one will be having a match tonight. So it's not as if just you will be missing it.

Ahh, an explanation, thanks for the heads up!

Actually Zips, it is working for quite a few people.

The status page before I started gettign 404 15 mins ago was showing >60,000. Or maybe it was showing false info and is why it is now 404.

Well I saw that too... But the network quickly went down after that. I was able to finally log in before (When that Status page was up), yet couldn't join a server. Now I can't even log in (About 5-10 minutes later).

So what we saw wasn't exactly up to date, and a majority of the people are once again experiencing problems unfortunately.

Actually, the status page's info from its uptime a short while ago was somewhat correct, as the entire network was down, but then was brought back up again, and clients reconnected. Unfortunately, the network came down once more, and the web server for Steampowered.com is really taking a beating, so 404s are springing up all over the place.

It's really a mess, I hope it gets sorted out soon.

It's not a Steam network problem; it's the network connections to it. It's mainly this reason that Valve is having such a hard time fixing the problem.

Yeah... through a few refreshes there I was able to see the Status page. As it is, I cannot log into my Steam account, and I won't even bother with the boards. I hope for everyone's sake the problems are fixed. I also hope people read the posting there or here, or anywhere else this news is posted and not blame Steam or Valve for things they could not control in this case.

I should also make note that people still continue to blame this on Steam both here and at the Steam boards... Quite unfortunate people don't pay attention to the news.
