It's Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. I remember Gabe saying in an interview earlier this year that he played Half-Life 2 multiplayer everyday.
Well don't forget that, officially speaking, "Half-Life 2 multiplayer" is CS:Source.

(tf2 or cs2 [ you do remember that goosy has been working on this right? We even saw an animation for it in an interview a few years back, before hl2 was even known, more recent, valve said people who had been pulled to finish hl2 will be returning to their projects.... ] )
You know, for the past year or so, I've thought about that video interview, and I'm really starting to doubt we'll ever see that particular work. That was probably a good 3 years ago that we saw that news video, and while the news announcer said "the next version of Counter-Strike," I'm not sure he knew what he was talking about.

I mean, seriously, half of the video we saw was some really old player animations, and there was just a brief glimpse of Gooseman modeling a G36 (the only real suggestion that it was CS2, seeing as we've never seen a G36 appear in CS). However, it's quite possible he was working on a concept, and decided to scrap it, so who knows? Point being, there may be a CS2 out there in the distant future, but for now I don't think we necessarily have any definitive proof that it's in development.

maybe friends will finally work again....
Haha, no... I don't expect Friends to ever work correctly. The only time it ever worked right was for a brief period during the beta of 1.6, and the number of clients was a lot smaller back then. Friends working right now? My mind simply cannot comprehend such a thing. :)

Halo 2's ending was a cliffhanger as well, but that didn't make the game any less enjoyable. Just left you wanting more is all, and you know that, whenever in the distant future Halo 3 comes out, there'll be a heck of a lot of people buying it.

Same deal here, though I'd bet a pretty penny that HL3 finds us before Halo 3 does. They already said they'd be doing it on the Source engine, so now it's just a matter of optimizing it and adding bits of this and that, rather than having to completely build a game from scratch. Most of your time then comes down to level design, sound sequencing, and doing it all in a way that somehow surpasses what HL2 already is. :)

I'd be rather surprised if more than 2-3 years pass before HL3 is on the shelves. Er, on the virtual shelves, anyway... stupid Steam. :P

And guys, see how each person's name (for those who aren't cowards) is a link with their email address? How about using that for personal messages? Thanks.

I don't even notice that part of Steam (Friends) anymore. VALVe should just scrap the current build of Friends and rework the entire system.

I dont really think anything CS related can be classed as much of a surprise seeing as its the only thing Valve have concentrated on for the past 3 years on the multiplayer side of things....

i mean come on, time for something fresh and new right :)

HL2DM would be where my money's at.

Also would make everyone extremely happy i think. shooting people's buggies over with the grav gun

I think the surprise is that they will enable you to download maps off a server in CSS as they said would happen. Also, it would start downloading the next map in rotation or which has been voted on while you are still playing the current one as they also stated. I think thats the surprise.

Basically, you're right. Its just more crap. It would be nice if they used that opportunity to further develop the various characters in the game. Instead they make a point of detatching you from reality and making the plot seem irrelevant. This seems like a bad play for Valve, because now I'm not really interested in what happens.

IF Valve chooses to fix this in the HL2 add-ons ("Combine"d Force, haha) then they may appease players, but if not, then I don't care to ever see HL3.

The way HL2 ends isn't a "cliffhanger". It is a cut to something that tries to imply the irrelevance of your actions and the passing of time. Period. You may wonder about what happens next in some respects, but you don't learn anything new. A cliffhanger REQUIRES that you learn something new. You learn NOTHING at the end of HL2. What a waste!

Is anyone else a counter-strike player who comes to a "Counter-strike nation" and a little depressed about seeing Half-life this half-life that.. i understand it's a half-life mod but, a half-life2 update has nothing to do with cs.

For those who think im offtopic, i decided posting this here because.. it kind of shows what im talking about.

not to get people thinking that im a troublemaker or anything it's just that i only have counter-strike and i've seen no cs news here in ages so it's making me not so anxious to view the sight.

not to mention the potd is the same everyday and such
