did anybody notice that the grill at the end of the river is removed. looks like you can run under there.
If you pause the video you can get a closer look at it. it looks as if it continues for a ways then turns to the right. But i cant imagine that they would actualy change a map as commonly used as Aztec.

speaking of aztec, im not really a fan of that long, steep staircase going up near the bomb plant

only the first step has geometry and the rest is a texture.. it looks noob.

they should fix that. or redesign that part.

If im not mistaken the rest of the staircase is actualy part of the sky-box, which now has some very impresive features. animations/3d objects/ect.

That's pretty funny, considering the heavy revisions that Aztec has undergone over the past few years. I agree that extending that tunnel doesn't seem very logical, though.

Is it true that its been leaked?
There was a CS: Source leak in October 2003 yes, when nobody even knew about it. That leak is way outdated now. There is no new leak.

Meaning it looks more lifelike then an overdone "shiny", "plastic" effect that oozes off most everything in Doom 3. Organic = real, lifelike.

Even the recommended specs are something quite high. I'm not saying they're beyond all realms of thought, but from a MARKETING stand point it seems like a terrible idea to make a game that not everyone can fully enjoy. PC Gamer even states that on the lower end systems it still looks good but plays noticably choppier. Frame rates are more important than graphical splender any day of the week, and if the lower spec computers can't play it smoothly what's the point?

Don't put words into my mouth. I never said the game was bad. In fact I think it will be a quite enjoyable single player game, but it's still absurd that the game will have such high requirements for what is essentially a retelling of a 10+ year old game.

Enjoy your 4 player online gaming. The norm for multiplayer FPS games now is much, much higher than that, and what's holding it back? A good chunk rests on the fact that most systems don't have the power to handle anything higher then 4 player matches in Doom 3 while still maintaining a solid framerate. That's also shoddy work on Id's part to leave so much up to the mod community in terms of multiplayer.
I know what Zips means when he says Organic. It's not a problem of either games graphics, it's just the direction that the texture artists have taken. It looks like Valve has good texture artists, and ID Software... don't.

I prefer the "organic" look that HL2 has. Organic meaning real, gritty, and raw.

Actually id software has Kenneth Scott, who is a fucking nut-- one of the best texture artists working in the western gaming industry. I'm not extremely knowledgeable of what i'm about to talk about, but I think the big difference isn't just textures-- doom 3 relies heavily on bump mapping, it looks like just about every model in the game is that way. On the other hand, it looks like valve has a taken a minimalist approach with their bump mapping, but they also seem to have all sorts of nice shaders to use.

Valve's system is probably a lot more friendly for mod makers, and it will probably be a real pain in the ass for people wanting to mod doom, because they have to bump map all of their models so that everything will flow nice together on screen. Id still made a good decision though-- I imagine that with the game's lighting the single player is going to scare the hell out of you in a way that hl2 can't. They're just two different games with different purposes when you come down to it, I don't see why this is being argued over.

There's no way you can compare the two.

DooM 3 is a horror-action flick based in a Mars research facility.

Half-Life 2 is a sci-fi story-driven shooter based in a fictional City bearing strong resemblances to real-world locales.

There's also a huge difference between the two's technologies. Sure, they both support bump(/normal)-mapping, but Half-Life 2 uses fake radiosity lighting which does not allow for extensive use of dynamic stencil shadows, whereas DooM 3 has shadowing out the wazoo.

For that matter, most people haven't even seen the FINAL versions of either game yet, and you can't judge the texturework based on a PRE-ALPHA. (Please. That's just wrong.)

And I still hate people who think that it is an absolute requirement that you NEED to make your game accessible to the masses. DooM 3 and Far Cry ARE accessible to the masses -- You just have to get over the fact that you can no longer turn EVERY SINGLE @#$%ING SETTING UP like you have in every game in the past 3 years! Why is this a bad thing!? It's positively ABSURD that people are complaining about INNOVATION IN THE INDUSTRY!

I mean everything above the first step.. i hardly doubt that's a sky box.

There's just one step, and the rest of the steps are textured.

Plus, as an end user, i dont really care how it's implemented, as long as it looks good.
