Sorry dude, couldn't disagree with you more. If skill is really the big concern here, then there would be no problem, since the players you're talking about who use "stopsound" are undoubtedly so skilled that they don't need to use it, right? I mean, they're supposed to be so good, so what's a couple of crickets or running water in the background.
Right, I think if stopsound was taken away, people would still get along without it and it wouldn't make people play crappily, but it's just an unnecessary distraction.
See what gets me about so many of these CS arguments is that people tend to hide behind the "skill" excuse when what they're really referring to is ways to make the game easier for them.
Why make the game harder than it should be? Again, it's player vs. player, team vs. team, not player vs. player vs. map.
I say if you want to encourage skill, you should encourage the removal of the stopsound command. Train those ears to hear over the background noise. You can do it. You're "skilled," remember?
Maybe if the ambience wasn't so damn loud, you could.
      Bruce Willis wrote..

Right on, carrying on entro's argument you could say that player skins only get in the way of one's "skill" and should therefore all be monochrome.
I don't think it'd impact the game one way or the other. You do know that the CPL used cl_minmodels 1 so that all T models are the same, and all CT models are the same. Happening to have your player skin match the texture that you're standing against is not skill, sorry.
      Thortok2000 wrote..

I'd much rather stopsound be removed, and map makers make more 'pleasing' ambient noise, then to keep with the current system of ugly ambient noise and people just muting it because it's annoying. This should be very possible in CS:S.
I'd be okay with that, though I don't see what the big deal is about people who use it. In the end, if you can't shoot them, it's not the rain's fault. The same thing could be said against my argument, but like I said, the ambience doesn't make me aim worse, throw my nades crappier, plant the bomb.. sloppily? It's just an unnecessary and annoying distraction that shouldn't be apart of competitive play. For pubs, no big deal except that it's annoying.

cliffe mentions that now new maps will be more like real locations and not arenas

hes a fucking liar, most maps based in real locations like oilrig or thunder are getting fewer and fewer in number in favour of arenas with a visual theme; like dust or aztec and now iceworld ffs

FUCKING ICEWORLD, cs was meant to be rainbow6 with no planning not quake
You do know that not all maps that are played in CS are made by Valve, right?
      -:Nighthawk:- wrote..

Your opponent's next footstep will be present in a quarter of a second, where as the ambient sounds will be gone for good. Hardly a valid comparison.
Oh I know. I was just explaining what stopsound does. I wasn't saying it has disadvantages from using it, though I guess it does, but they're so minimal that they shouldn't even be regarded.
      HankPym wrote..

I believe that this game would be exactly where it is today, even if the so-called "e-sports" did not exist.

It would be very difficult to prove either one of us wrong on this issue, though...
Don't think it'd be exactly the same, but similar. What about the roundtime at 2:30, and the various changes that came with that update? That was pruposed by Shaguar, a prominant e-sports competitor.
      crazychicken wrote..

yeah becusae those cpl players sure do buy more copies than all of us noobs

and us noobs will only buy hl2 and csS to be like our heroes in the cpl

      household names and such

cpl is the biggest waste of time ive ever seen

whole point of computer games is enjoyment not walking everywhere and camping the bombsites like fags
Actually, I'd argue that competitive players, by ratio, do buy more copies of HL/CS simply because alot of them cheat and get caught.

CPL is about competition, not necessarily having fun the whole time. There is alot of money to be won at the CPL, I'm sure you'd be damn careful, too.

As far as walking and camping bombsites goes, when I play public, yea I don't walk around everywhere, though I do walk at times when I'd like to not be heard so I can kill people, which is fun to me. Just running around in CS doesn't particularly excite me. Beating people does.

You don't tell us how to play our matches, and we wont tell you how to play public servers.

#200 weeee. Nice to see the shield being removed. I like the sound of the flashbangs deafening you and giving a high pitched whine in the ear as well. I think limiting it to only Dust will make some of the Beta testers feel like they're getting a bit of a raw deal. Perhaps Aztec and Dust2 as they are both the most widely played maps would go down better.

Oh yeah and what #199 said. I wish they'd make CS:S a little less noob friendly. Makes me laugh when you see someone who has been playing the grand sum of 3 days mow down someone who is in a top level clan by random spray. Gotta love that.

        Actually no.

If people are going to play the game to the point where they care about completely level playing fields, they should atleast know some of the basic important console commands, like stopsound. Yea, I have stopsound bound to "f". Playing matches on train, and having to hear the annoying, poor quality triggers go off is just frustrating. That, and usually in pubs when some idiot starts trying to coordinate movements like it matters, I'll hit stopsound rapid fire to make sure I don't hear him.
You know The Mute button works wonders.

you guys do realise that VALVe fuck up everything they lay their hands on

only decent maps are customs any more VALVe are trying to make cs a pure deathmatch experience and taking out all of the fun in maps because all you tards who take cs so seriously cant handle a map with a fixed mg position in it

            theyre doing it for purely financial gain which is understandable, doesnt mean cs is getting better;

OMGOMG i cant wait for cs source!!!!

why its the same fkn game but with better graphics, like cz

ie nothing special, sure it will be nice to play but seeing as VALVe mess everything up you can bet there will be some major issues even after the beta has been recalled taht they wont bother to fix for at least 2 years

I hope that Valve focus a little bit more the develop of CS.Scource to the esport scene. That´s the backbone of the game.

When I read which maps they convert untill now ( for example Havana, Piranesi and Chateau ) I´m note sure they do. No one play that maps on tournaments or online leagues. Maybe the CPL need to consult them.

inferno, train, nuke and prodigy need to be addet before launch.
E-Sports are not the back bone of this game. CPL took in CS because it was the most played Multi-player game ever to date. The community of Players be it "Pro" or "n00b" are the back bone and it is a damn shame Cal/CPL wont upgrade to HL:CZ it is much better than 1.6.

yeah i know, i hate the way cs has been going for years but i still play it becasue there isnt anything better

i only started in 6.5 so i missed beta 4 but the old maps were so much fun to play as they were designed for people to just have a laugh in

so people didnt walk everywhere and get ridiculously stressed if someone didnt complete the objective or got them killed

they were also crap maps in comparison but that was part of the fun

also maps like foption or thunder are gone replaced by maps like storm or torn, deathmatch arenas with themed visuals not actual locations which make sense

they might make a better quality of game but i dont want to play dust type matches constantly regardlesss of how well positioned the spawn sites are from the bombsites, runing around a well made facility is much more fun in my book than running around aztec or dust

Huh? I said making the skins all monochrome, as in bright red or green? Not simply using the same skin for every player, I wouldn't even call that an advantage.

Anyone who can look at CZ and not agree it looks and feels better than CS is just plain lying to himself. I started CS 5 years ago....so you can say I've played for awhile. I purchased CZ about 2 weeks after release. It felt wierd....at first. Then I alternated between CS and CZ for a couple of weeks. Finally I had to agree. CZ is a better game visually and once you get used to subtle differences, it even feels better than CS. After then another 2 weeks of playing strictly CZ, I tried CS again and IT was the one that felt wierd.

Sorry, but I'll take the higher polygon count version if CS. I think anyone who wants to say CS is better is merely lying to themselves to justify NOT coughing up the dough.

So...don't say CZ sucks....Just admit that you can't afford it and leave it at that. Same goes for CS:S.

Entro, the simple fact of the matter is, annoying or not, it's EASIER to play without the ambient noise. See my stopsound > de_aztec post for several examples of why this is true.

You're arguing that the skilled people should be allowed a game (or feature of a game) that's easier to play. Such arguement is fundamentally flawed.

You could aptly say that it's annoying and you don't like it. That's a matter of opinion. But to say that "skilled people should play without ambient sound" is clueless. You may as well play with unlimited ammo, because skilled people shouldn't have to reload. It's "team vs. team vs. ammo clips."

Your opinion is your own, and that's fine. You don't like ambient sound. We get that. But you should really give up on the whole 'skilled people should get an easier game' idea.

I think this huge issue about stopsound and advantages is a big load of hoopla, the only noticeable ambience sounds are in de_aztec. Tell me if there are any other maps that I missed.

What is this dog barking sound everyone is talking about? Is it the one in cs_747?

And is anyone else really excited about the new cs_office? I can't wait to be in a fire fight with someone and have all these papers from the desks being thrown up into the air!

The ambient noises in some of the maps are ok and actually add to the "feeling" of the map....just like there are real noises in real life.

The only map that I play in regularly that has a truly annoying and unnecassary noise is Italy. I'm just tired of hearing it and do take measures to silence it whether it's "stopsound" or just blasting the radio.

The argument about "skilled players shouldn't have to play with noises" is silly. I smell a over-inflated ego.
