No more than John Carmack was lying when he said that he only wanted DooM 3 shown at one E3 event, implying a late 2002 or early 2003 release. DooM 3 has been shown at three E3 events.
A lot of you dorks are over-reacting. There is very little difference between August and the fall. Some of you people are ridiculous. How could you possibly be pissed by this? Did you suddenly imagine that Valve working for a Summer release date meant that August 15th was set in stone, even though the company never gave a solid date and has a 6 year torrid history with release date speculation?
Frankly, I am tired of coming to a Valve fansite and seeing these stupid, awkward, and angst-ridden set of ridiculous anti-Valve comments. If you don't like Valve or don't agree with them, go ahead and say your opinion. That's not what I mean. What I'm talking about is the people who think a small "delay" is a) totally unexpected, b) proof that Valve lied to us, c) proof that their hardware is now totally out of date, or d) SEIROUSLT HE END OF THE WORLD IM SO PISSED! Does anyone consider <b style="color: green;">e) the game slipped a few months?
What exactly are people angry about? Valve is trying to finish the game. Do you want them to rush through development? Do you want them to never give any status updates so everyone has no idea when the game is going to come out? Do you expect them to foreshadow every small snag in development and iron out a perfect release date years in advance?
It's funny, people can make all these ridiculous demands of Valve. Well, maybe I should make a demand of the community. When something slips from an already loose release date to just a few months later, support the damn company because they're probably going to release a better product in the end. Support them because they're making CS Source. Support them because they're probably making a Game of the Year game. Support them because you play their current games all the time!
The most important thing to games obviously the street date. Frankly, Vivendi has almost no reason to release it as soon as possible. They'll catch more bugs with time, and they'll get more sales with a September or November release (due to the holiday rush).
But seriously, the difference between an August date and a late September date does not merit any controversy. None.

Rizzuh, your entire post is 100% right. Looking at some of the greatest game developers, they routinely miss projected release dates, and their products are better because of it. Blizzard is springing easily to mind, as in my opinion they and Valve are the leaders of the pack when it comes to game quality. I also admire Irrational's "say nothing" approach. They've been nearly completely silent on the progress of Freedom Force 2.
I propose that CS-Nation becomes a proactive force in rectifying this situation. Don't post any more release date info until you can safely post, "Half-Life 2 Released."Comment

He is right, most games (and I'm talking at least 75%) are not released on their first "release date". Most of the time this is not to the extent of hl2 (thought a few have been the same or longer). You just don't notice it, because most games don't receive the same amount of hype that hl2 does.

starcraft was, and still is, one of the most popular games in the world. Both of Blizzard's PvP titles have been played at the WCG for years simultaneously, i don't think any other company can say that for themselves.

When I saw this title I thought, "OMG! Its just going to be a bunch of people who's lives revolve around video games and are just gonna flame Valve for not meeting their last few release dates." Although, I hoped It wouldn't turn into that and yet it did. Could we just stop the Valve flame-a-thon. If you feel that you have been wronged by the delays then don't buy the game. It really isn't that difficult.Comment

You guys have to keep in mind, there's only been one real delay still. All else has been said to be broad enough that nothing concrete was confirmed, nor was there a single day set for release like it was last year.
You really have no right to be pissed. As it's been said, Valve never set a second release date in stone. They gave broad estimates as to when it would be released, just like most companies do.
And no, most companies do NOT make all of their deadlines. When you look at how many games are produced each year, there are a good deal of them delayed, and most of the time the public hardly knows about it.Comment
