Gabe Newell himself postet a thread on hl2fallout.com about the german version. he says that only the blood (maybe a bit more) will be removed in the german version.



and HL1 was also based on "the myst".

WOW i love that story. i can totally see where they got the ideas for some of their enemies. in the story it describes monstrous aliens legs and shapes amidst an unseethingly think fog that has succumb a small town, leaving residents locked up together in a store. good story, though i dont think much was taken aside from creature ideas...yah none was actually.

"The Mist" was a very cool short story by Stephen King. I read it in one of his collection books called, "Skeleton Crew."

Basicly the story revolves around a small town which one day finds itself engulfed by a mysterious fog which hides various horrific creatures that attack relentlessly and slowly turn the environment into an alien wasteland. There was never a clear explanation for the mist's arrival, but it was suspected to be a result of a nearby military research base.



When I first read it, I immediatly related it to Half-Life's universe. I recommend anyone to check out the story or better yet, the short story collection called "Skeleton Crew" which contains it.

I think comparing HL2 to Mist would be like comparing night of the living dead to the resident evil movie or something, just some basic inspiration. (ignore the fact that RE was a video game first)



Obviously gordon freeman isn't going to spend the duration of the game cramped up in a grocery store wondering what's out in the fog (steam lol).



I guess that's where gabe got the idea to base it in a city/town. I hope whatever is left of black mesa makes a sneak appearance in the game though :-)

Here's a bit of, "The Mist"

"You don't think--" he began, and a shriek came out of the fog.



Norton shut up. The tight jam [of people] at the OUT door loosened and then reversed itself. The babble of excited conversation, shouts and calls, subsided. The faces of the people by the door suddenly looked flat and pale and two dimentional. The shriek went on and on, competing with the fire whistle. It seemed impossible that any human pair of lungs could have enough air to sustain such a shriek. Norton muttered, "Oh my God," and ran his hands through his hair.



The shriek ended abruptly. It did not dwindle; it was cut off. One more man went outside, a beefy guy in chino workpants. I think he was set on rescuing the shrieker. For a moment he was out there, visible through the glass and the mist, like a figure seen through milkscum on a tumbler. Then (and as far as I know, I was the only one to see this) something beyond him appeared to move, a gray shadow in all that white. And it seemed to me that instead of running into the fog, the man in the chino pants was jerked into it, his hands flailing upwards as if in surprise.



For a moment there was total scilence in the market.

A constellation of moons suddenly glowed into being outside. The parking-lot sodium lights, undoubtedly supplied by underground electrical cables, had just gone on.



"Don't go out there," Mrs. Carmody said in her best gore-crow voice. "It's death to go out there."

Whoa, The Mist sounds pretty creepy... but good too.
