1. By creating a cheat, hackers violated copyright laws in that they create code that modifies a copyrighted program.
2. Every game company can claim the extra expense to either create programs like VAC or in the case of most of the other FPS, the cost of having to hire Punkbuster. They can attempt to sue for those expenses.
3. As one person said, they can claim lost sales, because of the people who won't play due to Cheats. BHD series is perfect example. A lot of people quit buying new series because of rampant cheats.
Of course, what is really great is Punkbusters new policy. PB copies the serial numbers from your hardware and stores them. Cheat in one game and get banned, you are banned in ALL Punkbuster supported games. Plus you can't just go out and buy a new copy of the game for a new CD ID, you have to buy a complete new computer if you want to play. And they have already said that the ban is permanent. You let little brother or collage buddy play on your machine and they download a cheat and PB catches them. Tough Luck
