German law says that a website with a sole intention to harm a company and this very company sues the site owner, this website has to be taken down until after the court decides upon the case. If the owner decides against taking down the website he will be fined.



On a sidenote, German law also says that a hoster can be made liable for the content of the hosted websites. Kinda bad idea to host a cheat website imho.

i know about law. i study it as well as look at history and watch serious court trials. although im no expert.



the hosting company is definitely at fault. its like harboring a felon or in legal terms "Aiding and Embedding a Criminal" it sounds extreme but in this case... not so much.



however Valve could sue on other charges, or collectively sue all the hackers together. the German hackers are screwed no doubt. But the US ones will be hard to prove. Valve could use the case they used German against the Americans and show that the American offenders whould be punished as equally.

i dunno about you guys but i searched the i-net for wallhack , aimbot etc etc , and what do u know? i found the ogc site with all the new cheats . Couldnt Valve just do the same and download the cheats? analyse the cheats and walla :) new cheat secured

they probably do, but thats more EXTRA work for them... they might as well force them to stop completely by suing them and taking action

It's pretty much an uphill battle when they make an update that detects cheats then moments after the update the creator goes through and changes a couple things and it is undetetable again. Chances are if you can find the cheat on a public site then chances are valve already knows about it. I think the problem comes down to the fact they cant update the game as frequently as the cheat creators can alter the cheat to make it undetectable again.



Even if they don't really have much legal stance just the fear factor alone i think is good enough to scare the hosts into dropping the sites. If i was running a webhosting company and a company informed me about legal actions because of one of the sites i host i would rather drop that site then deal with the hassle.

You people do realize that if someone's cheating, they're doing it because they decided to, and they didn't mean to ruin it for you, they just want to win. There's actually a simple solution to this problem, known as ban/kick. You already have people that can spot hackers, why not just kick them out of a server? Any knowledgeable lawyer will tell you that this is a crap shoot for Valve and they are going to be sending good money down a rabbit hole. This is an announcement for annoucement's sake, to scare some pimply faced "l33t h4x0rs" out of trying their mettle against VAC.



As for anyone who thinks this is a criminal offense, good luck. This is civil offense baby, all the way. Valve has no more power to prosecute someone criminally than you or I, that's the job of States Attorneys, Attorney Generals, etc (i.e. - Justice Department, Janet Reno, you get the point).



It's just like the RIAA lawsuits and the DirectTV/Dish Network "sue you or settle" letters, a scare tactic to blackmail someone (who probably did steal the programming/music) into coughing up some dough. Its all about money, pure and simple, and anyone who tells you its about cheating or trying to make the game more enjoyable for the end user probably also has a bridge somewhere they'd like to sell too.

Even if Valve cant really do anything legally, just putting these people thru the legal system can easily suck up any resources they have. Leaving them financially and mentally drained and unable to continue making the cheats. When you have run out of money on lawyers and cant eat or afford a place to live, it makes it hard to want to write code.
