I'm no law student, but it would seem common sense that the EULA is something you agree to before playing Half-Life. I cannot see any way it could cover a web site too, they are unrelated. You could start up a web site for HL cheats without ever having played Half-Life.

Maybe they are saying that these sites promote illegal activity as they can only be used with Half-Life which would require them to break the EULA. But hmm, I don't really see it standing up in court.

The threat of legal action is usually enough though, which is probably their most likely aim.

I'm all for it anyway, it won't solve the problem completely, but I don't think there is one magic solution to remove cheaters from the game. Attacking them from all sides is a good idea.
are you trying to say the people who create these cheats made them with no first hand understanding or testing in hl?

What is with people and this cheating thing? You people do realize that if someone's cheating, they're doing it because they decided to, and they didn't mean to ruin it for you, they just want to win. There's actually a simple solution to this problem, known as ban/kick. You already have people that can spot hackers, why not just kick them out of a server? It's completely unnecessary to take legal action against people who make cheats for CS.

will valve be seeking death penalties?

I say get the people who make the cheats to tell valve exactly how they work, so they can find the people using them, then send all to jail for a big hacker orgy.
We can only hope! And truthfully I bet that Valve know exactly how they work, but it all depends on what loop hole they exploit.

Yes. They should get a court order to force the coders to fork over their source code. It would make VAC much more accurate if they had the source for some of the hacks out there.

Not to hard to prove means everytime you loginto Steam you agree to it also when you sign up your account you agree to it and pinpointing the computer it was used on is a very very easy task means your computer sends your IP addy along with your user name and password to valve
You don't understand what I'm saying. That's completely wrong. You don't have to agree to the EULA to write a hack. So how can VALVe take legal action against people that write hacks?

How would someone write hacks without 1) the SDK which generally covers hacks as pointed out by someone on the HL 2 Fallout forums 2) a copy of HL to reverse engineer it, in both cases there is an EULA to agree to.

Theres some people out there that only cheat to ruin the experience for you.

Not all cheaters are super obvious and easily spotted.

I don't see why it's unnecessary to try and stop something (in this case cheating) that the community is so strongly against.

I'm a little glad that theyre trying to stop cheating but like nighthawk, I am also afraid of the implications.

Okay then, I didn't know people just do that for their own pleasure. I always found hackers funny, anyway. I guess so then. But doesn't Valve update their cheat detection everytime an update to Steam is released?

                                valve has a case.

once the EULA is violated. a person could pay fines and damages, as well as jailtime. The act of hacking a published software item falls under the category of "Piracy, Digital Sabotage, Illegal Hacking, etc." or under "Coroporate Sabotage, Digital Fraud" or these random ones "Contract Violation" "Vandalism" "Pain and Suffering(related to updating VAC/or other players)" "Copyright Infringement" "failure to comply with User Agreement"

i have guessed on a few. but i know most of them for sure. As for when, i dont think Valve would publically announce the move to take legal action until they have actually contacted the parties involved and gotten their sites frozen and gotten all their pictures together. Valve's lawyer would only allow a public announcement like this only after all the evidence is in place.
