What does eveyone mean when they say "it was a very good read". Does this mean they enjoy 3 pages of ranting and arguing thru emails between 2 people?

you guys forgot that 80 percent of the cs community has the attention span of a gnat on meth, next time compress your article into 2-5 statsme lines if u want to make a point

I don't think I really have cause to bitch about CS:CZ because I didn't spend money on it!

Of course he was given a copy. He's the head of the biggest CS fan site out there.

I was, but it was after I wrote that.

Valve has some talent, steam is genious, a great idea.

I feel that Valve abuses their ability to change anything they want in a game at the press of a button. They need to think before they act. Stop putting all the unessessary bullshit in the game like the "skull" headshot icon. They should post polls in their forums about updates instead of releasing the madness at completely random times.

Valve seems to have a habbit of listening to all the noobs out there. While they make the game attract more noobs, they scare away all the vets. For example, the awp issue, all the noobs get pissed off when they get awped, and say it is unbalanced. But infact, it makes the game MORE balanced, especially on larger maps.

The AWP delay is completely unecessary. Quick-switching (before the delay update) only enabled you do shoot maybe 1/10th of a second faster.

The reasons people quick switched were:

                  1. Smaller model, broader view of the battlefield

                  2. AWP has very slow run speed, switch to your knife or pistol

                  to run faster inbetween shots

                  3. Take a couple shots with your pistol

                  4. Keep the scope from coming back up before you want it to

Yeah, so what is my point? I bet the people at valve who do the CS updates dont even play CS. All they do is browse thru their forums and read all the complains noobs post.

Some of us have spent multiple years getting to know CS and getting really good at it. We worked for our skill at the game. Anyone who thinks they can instantly become godlike at a game needs to think again. Practice makes perfect.

If you suck, dont blame the game. If it was the game then EVERYONE would suck.

And the moral of the story is: Use your brain. Its there for a reason.

I've always respected Fragmaster, and for as long as I can remember, he's been tied to Planet Half-Life. He's been a cool guy all along the way. After reading this, I respect him even more. Someone needed to say this, it's quite obvious that Valve is doing the same thing with Half-Life 2 that they were doing with Half-Life. They delayed the original game to "make it better", this game was delayed because they simply flat out lied to everyone and the game was no where near being complete.

The simple fact is - Valve never said what year, and now that Gabe is starting to talk about HL2 being "given to Viviendi" in August, I'm starting to think that September 30th 2004 is actually looking like a plausible date (or at least, near it). I pre-ordered my copy of HL2 way back when in August of last year, so I already own the game. The source code leak was very sad, but taking nearly a year to "change the game around so that cheaters can't take advantage of the code" is bullsh|t.

Do I think Half-Life 2 will be a good game? Of course. I loved the original, and I think I'll love this game too. Valve really stiffed the MOD developers though, most MODs for HL2 are being transferred to FarCry because everyone is tired of waiting with absolutely no information. I'm attempting to hold my MOD team together with nothing to do; I'm working on the old HL1SDK because I want to get something done - I'm just hoping that the porting from HL1 to HL2 won't be a big pain in the ass, but I'm not holding my breathe.

Also, about all of the ranting going on about Valve's other titles. Valve has only created one game, and they're living on the profits that Counter-Strike (and that shitty Cyber Cafe Steam model) is bringing in them. They only created Half-Life, they outsourced for the other two expansion packs, and even the Playstation 2 version of HL. Condition Zero went through so many developers, Valve should have done it themselves (and looking at how crappy it came out, I'm starting to think they might have done it themselves).

I would have also liked to see this article between let's say maybe Rizzuh and Fragmaster. If that was to happy, it would be a much better article. I'm sorry to say, but I disagree with both Rizzuh and Asspennies, and I don't know if they are just not talking their minds, or they are just blatently blind at what Valve has/is doing. Fragmaster vs. Rizzuh/Asspennies would have made for a much better article.

                      Love this counter-point.

I say, Steam is a very well-thought out idea. Basically, it's a great idea, but was poorly executed (at least in it's early "final" form).

Valve is trying to make a system to caters to its fans more, and to do away with the then 5-year-old WON.net system.

But yet, some people, who hate Steam for reason x or y, goes back to WON and plays 1.5, or whatever mod that fits your fancy.

But both Steam and WON have pros and cons. For example, it's hard to install some 3rd party mods (such as Sven Co-op) to Steam unless it has it's own special Steam installer. That wasn't the case with WON, all you had to do was extract the files to SIERRA\Half-Life (or wherever your old HL installation was pointed towards) and bam, it'd be there in the "Custom Game" menu.

This is also unfortunate for Singleplayer mod classics such as They Hunger, which use the old .pak files that was used in the old engine, rather than the new GCF files. If one were to play They Hunger on Steam, one must extract all the files from the .pak files and move them to the corresponding folders, THEN move it to SteamApps\your@email.com\Half-Life\, which seems kind of a hassle.

Also, it seems fruitless for programs like DMC or Ricochet to have their own special HL.exe and folder for it, when it was a HL mod initally.

Personally, I think that mods like DMC, Opposing Force, etc should be accessed from the main Half-Life folder, and that just Half-Life (not CS or DOD) should have a "Custom Game" menu so that one can switch from one game to the other instantly without having to wait for Half-Life to quit and to open whatever other game they wish to play. However, this should only apply to non-commercial HL mods. So I think that CS, TFC, and DOD should have their own folder and exe because those are commercial versions of the program.

But then again, I believe that I've ranted on for too long. So I'll stop here.

I'll conclude this by saying that Valve knows it has a fanbase, and wants to be dedicated to it. and that Steam is intending (and hopefully, will be) the future of gaming. Wouldn't it be cool to access something like the next Quake or UT under Steam? Sure, it seems like that'll never happen, but one can dream.

Doesn't Half-Life already have the "Custom Game" dialog? If not, it's very easy to enable. You just need to extract the .res file from the GCF and uncomment the custom game dialog. I've done it while testing my mod on DoD Retail standalone.

to "right" something is perfectly grammatically acceptible.

your phrase "to right the strategy guide" could be interpreted as "to correct the guide"

i think with the development of VALVe comes the development of the community (note how i DIDN'T say maturity). the game has shaped over the years apart from new (but buggy) technology. however, the game is developing faster than the community that enjoyed the old versions of CS. i think the main thing that pisses people off with VALVe's steam is, simply put, counter-strike 1.6 and CAL. many people (including myself) have quit just because of this, i didn't mind steam too much (except for the new laggy graphics), it was something that could be tolerated once things quieted down. that's why many people are still playing it.

the game has developed into a different type of "fun". the old counter-strike community, as i remember it, was less developed towards "WHO IS MORE CAL-I THAN THE OTHER PERSON!!". i remember being able to laugh a lot more easily at stupid things that happened in that game. in 1.6, when i see a person in a "pub" (again, more stupid lingo) that makes a mistake, i see a bunch of angry teamsays the next round. it also seems that "nt, gj, ns" have disappeared in 1.6. there was still a considerable amount of shit talking "back then", that's how CS runs, but since things like CAL were unheard of, people couldn't be "ranked" like they are today, they were without a workable medium of competition, so no one was the wiser. i'm not saying the community was any better back then, i just could tolerate the immaturity better because it was simply a matter of stupid people. now, the game has developed into stupid idiots that think they are good because of CAL. they will make it to some CAL-Intermediate clan that will die by next week, and go around thinking they are hot stuff.

after reading this article, and seeing a lot of the recent news, i can see that VALVe is really trying to get this right. it's not like are oblivious to the public, but they have a lot of kinks to work out. i'm not waiting for CS:S, i'm done with games, but the time when CS was fun (betas, v1.0-.5) was the best waste of time ever. i gained so many new friends through it, and i vividly remember LAN parties involving chugging down cokes and trying to run each other down in de_jeepathon2k, or with much hilarity, blowing your opponents away in he_tennis. now that the game has become more competitive, a new wave of gamers have come to the game, or the game has shaped the older players into competitive players.

i don't mean to complain about others more skilled than i, in my opinion i am not a "poor" player. i played on many CAL-Main teams, which brings me to another point about immature competitive players. NOT EVERYONE HAS PLAYED IN CAL-MAIN. all the immature players all say their stupid CAL-Intermediate team is CALMAIN REFORMED OMG OMG OMG, but they are failing to realize that you actually have to have _played_ in CAL-Main to have CAL-Main experience.

anyways, that's my two cents. feel free to disagree, flame, etc. :)
