i didnt have 1 problem downloading that pack.. i got at least a solid 3-400kb/sec the whole time. took like 5mins for the thing to d/l.

the pack is decent enough (pretty maps), but frankly, all those extra skins seem unnecessary - long loading times...

I was working on a mission pack site but put it on hold, might go back to it but it would be better if CSNATION did it.

nope 300kbps gets the file in around 8 minutes <-- what i download at btw.

You're mostly right (as I'll show below) but don't take that to mean you're not necessarily stupid.

300k/s would get you the download in around 11 minutes.

(190*1024/300/60 = 10.8 minutes)



400k/s would get you the download in just over 8 minutes, yes.

(190*1024/400/60 = 8.1 minutes)



However, 400kbps means 400,000 bits per second (not 400 x 1024 bits per second), a speed which is a mere 7x faster than a 56kbps modem, and that would take you a little over an hour.

(190*1024*8*1024/400000/60 = 66.4 minutes)



The whole K / M think can be confusing when talking about internet speeds. K and M in file sizes are based on 1024 multipliers (ie, 1MB = 1024x1024 = 1048576 bytes), where as in connection speeds, they're based on 1000 multipliers (1mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second).



This starts being noticeable when you talk about supposedly high-speed connections like my 3Mbps connection. That means 3,000,000 bits per second. Take that to bytes, however, and you're at 375,000 bytes per second, or 366k/s, or 0.358M/s.



3Mbps sounds huge, but when you realize you're still only getting about a third of a meg per second, it sounds less impressive. I'm not complaining -- it's still way better than my old 56k, but yeah, it's kind of annoying that connection speeds aren't rated by practical terms that actually mean something in relation to file sizes.
