Ventrilo Update

The company I worked for emailed them to buy the pro version since the clan we are in has 10-16 in vent most the time. They told us to f#$% off if we were not going to resell it. Then they threatened to sue. F'em... we are going back to TeamSpeak.

Read that sentence five times. The end user does not have to pay. If you offer it to your clan for free, you don't have to pay. If you offer it to others for free, you don't have to pay. But the instant you start charging people to use your Ventrilo server, then you have to pay a very small fee to Ventrilo anyway, much, much less than you'd be getting from your customers anyway.



Another point is that the common user-created server (remember, this is a server that you did NOT pay for, this is one that you are making ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER) cannot really have more than 8 people connected anyway. On a cable/dsl connection, they said that more than 8 people can't really be connected with any stability, and this is brought out even more when the host server computer is also playing a game as well.



I for one read that entire page about why the 8 user limitation and why they had to do it. And I agree with them. Anyone who doesn't agree with them should at least give them the courtesy of hearing what they have to say on the subject. This is only part of it, but probably the one you should most read:



It all boils down to the fact that with 75% of all businesses selling Ventrilo servers not paying the tiny license fee, they had to do something, and this was what they chose to do.



These guys don't just write software to give it away for free, you know. I think it's quite fair and honest for them to allow anyone to use it for free. However, as soon as you or any business starts offering Ventrilo servers for payment...



Imagine you owned a really good tractor, or car, or whatever. And somebody wants to borrow it, so you say "Sure". Then, next thing you know, this guy is making hundreds of dollars by renting out your tractor or whatever to other people. So you say, "give me ten cents for every person you rent the tractor to." Considering that he's making hundreds of dollars anyway, was this really a big deal?



75% of the companies were saying "Yes" to that question, and refusing to pay the ten cents. So Ventrilo is basically taking their tractor back.

But we're limited to eight even if we offer it free, correct? Yeah, good game.

It's not Ventrillo's fault. Blame all those illegal hosters. Ventrilo was ready to offer the full service free...but people took advantage. So it's their fault that Ventrilo has to limit it to 8 so they won't go out of business.

Doesn't mean that have to take it out on me. All I want is to host a Ventrilo server on my box and have visitors to my site connect to it have my friend's teams hang out on it.

So stick with 2.1 if it's a personal server, I seriously doubt the guys at Ventrillo are going to go after you when you're not making money off of it. More likely they're doing this so that they can legally go after any large hosting companies making money off of their software, should those companies refuse to pay the small fee.



If you're a hosting company, this is relevant. If not, you can easily pretend this update never was released, and everything works like it always did. You're not the people causing the problem, so you likely won't be the targets of any legal action.

The problem with sticking with 2.1 is that you can no longer download 2.1 from Ventrilo's site, and a lot of it's mirrors are also upgrading to 2.2.



Had that problem in a scrim last night, had to google to find 2.1.4 for a guy who had accidently upgraded his client to 2.2.



Also, according to our clan leader, he runs 3 Ventrilo servers that commonly have about 5-10 people each (or more), while running CS, and doesn't experience any lag at all. This goes against what Ventrilo was saying about 8 being the maximum a computer can run...

i think dchozen should edit his news post at the end, seeing as he says:



"For those who use this popular voice application, you are required to download this update."



all this does is fool everyone into upgrading to 2.2, rather than stick with the FREE 2.1. so i suppose you can also add that



"if u still want to run a vent server for free with 200 slots, dont bother upgrading."

ventrilo's statements are based on a cable connection with 128Kbit upload, people with 256Kbit can host 12+ people and still play games lag free
