Yeah. Debit cards are the way to go, unless you're building a credit rating. You can also build credit ratings in other ways though.

Also, a credit card allows you to spend money you don't have in an emergency, to pay back later. If your car breaks down and you have a debit, not a credit, you're out of luck, even if your friend is going to pay you back that ten thousand dollars next week.

I, personally, would rather use a debit. Also, some debit cards are marked with MasterCard or Visa so they can be used as credit cards anyway, and some people not realize the difference.

So your quote should run more along the lines of "people who are poor and want to act like rich people get credit cards".

You've all got it wrong. Get a credit card that gives you free air miles every time you use it, and pay for everything with it, then pay the bill. Result? You still only spend the money you have, but you get to fly to exotic lands for free.

For the sake of convenience, though, I too only use a debit card, but it's still going through the Visa system to make it easy to use.

In the end, though, it's a pointless debate, 'cause most of us are or will be hugely in debt due to college, with no credit cards involved. *sigh*
