why can't they go out and buy more servers and bandwidth or get some people to help them with mirrors? this is not unexpected, it happened when Steam first came out. Valve should've known this would happen...

I'd LOVE to see eveyone that's female-dogging* about steam get together and try to do what valve does every weds. I bet a majority of you complaining cant code or do anything that looks like program. Well mine took less to a min to update, logged in, played a offline game, played a scrim. Looks like this update worked fine for me.

I was able to get on and play after an hour and a half of screwing around.



Flash crowds are a reality. You can't just say "wait a while" and make them go away. I hope Valve is trying to address the problem by hiring the author of bittorrent, I beleive his first name is Bram.



If Valve would like the community to help solve is bandwidth/flash crowd problem, they will need the HL mod and CS community to help. That help will entail people willing to give some of their bandwidth for the greater good of the community.



That will in turn mean that Valve has to be someone the community knows, likes, and trusts. This seems to be the weak-point in a hypothetical bittorrent-like solution.
