I think that anyone that says Nascar ,F1 or any other motorsport is not physical should try it some time.

CS can be a sport ,like chess etc. But not considered as athletic activity.

i dont see the need for gaming to be considered a sport. the word 'game' implies that its more about fun than competition, but there's nothing wrong with playing a game to a high level. i consider chess a game rather than a sport, along with with pool, darts, poker, ect. engaging in these activities does NOT make you an athlete. maybe this all stems from high school nerds wishing they were jocks. come on guys........ it may be esports........... but its not sport.

      edit

pff, next the robot wars guys will want to be called athletes. you're not an athlete or engaging in sport if you can smoke, eat donuts and weigh 300 pounds while playing. i know many cs players who can :p

So true.. Racing those cars is *very* physical, especially F1.. I bet Mr. Torbull wouldn't last 10 minutes in those cars.. The G-forces will get to him so bad.. Playing CS is nothing compared to it..

I think any activity that makes you sweat should be considered a sport.

I completly agree with cabeza. How could you ever put the word gamer with athlete. Pathetic.

i love how every esport news post turns into a "IS COUNTER-STRIKE A SPORT??" debate

                and by the way, since everyone wants to post definitions from dictionary.com, look up sport. you'll notice that the third definition of it is "An active pastime; recreation." so is counter-strike a sport? yeah, it's defined by a sport since it is an active pastime of some people (if you want to get really technical, active could mean me lifting my head up to look at the cieling, it isn't just defined by running 300 meters with a ball in my hand). now, we can copy and paste cabeza's first three lines we'll see that it says;

"athlete: A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts"

you'll notice the word "sports" is inside the definition of "athlete", meaning that to be an athlete you have to play a sport, and we've already been through what "sports" means, so therefore yes, if you want to get as technical as me and not just shoot off at the mouth after reading one single definition from dictionary.com, Counter-Strike is a sport and anyone who plays that sport (called Counter-Strike) is an athlete.

edit: i'm waiting for the "so if i play counter-strike once that makes me an athelete????" argument from someone

i am not an athelete....but i play cs? how can this be. Shut up everyone who is on the nerd side of the argument please. It might be put down offically in dictionaries that game players can be atheletes. But we all know that playing a game takes no atheletic ability.

Do you play it competitively? If not then no, no you aren't an athlete. Thanks for your insightful addition about yourself to these forums. And is your only argument "Shut up"? Because your argument of Counter-Strike not taking any athletic ability can be shot down by needing good hand-eye coordination, or fast reaction times, or knowing how to strategize and plan ahead of your moves (which can be done with chess, something that's widley considered a sport).

i love how that simply isnt true. this news post quoted a question from the interview that deals with exactly that. you are right tho, its already been debated to death. its just because people want to justify the amount of time they spend playing the game by making it out to be more than it is. its human nature; pride where you can find it.

oh, and those are not athletic abilities.

Go back through every esports news post ever made on CSN and I can garuntee at least 70+% of them have someone in the thread mentioning how Counter-Strike isn't a sport.

And what the hell does pride have to do with any of this?

i agree, im glad people mentioned how NASCAR and f-1 is a physically demanding sport because it truly is, i remember when they did a physical competition with a combonation of atheletes football, soccer, baseball players and the guy from F-1 Racing actually won the competition.

I will tell them that, and they will agree with me. Their athletic abilites include running fast and hitting a ball hard. Hand eye coordination and fast reflexes dont imply athletic ability, they are just an advantage to an athlete.

Football includes hitting a ball hard? It includes knowing where a ball is going to be to make the catch, and if you can't know where the ball is going to be and make the catch then you won't be on the field as much as say, Randy Moss.

Tennis, you can either hit the ball and pray that the other person doesn't hit it (wow..kind of like spraying and praying you hit someone, huh?), or know where the ball is before you serve it, and coordinate your arm to hit the ball where you are looking, which would be at the corner at the other-end of the serving field.

I could explain the others but I'll just end this with

                              next

edit: by the way, the entire U of A football and tennis squad doesn't agree with you, that's the only college number I know since I graduated from there, feel free to give me any college/NFL/whatever you can think of numbers and I'll ask them too.

electronic games are only considered sports by gamers themselves because they are desperate for attention. electronic games are not sports, period.
