Hey Take13 I just thought of this brilliant solution.

Don't use any UA products if you don't like the way it works!

Just FYI, DeNiro/GIR/whatever the hell you call yourself now, the video card for hullu was a gift paid for and given by some of the UA *STAFF*, not from UA itself. Some of the staff sent some money in so he could afford a video card for his machine to get up and running. It wasn't a requirement for him to stay to get it. It was a gift, pure and simple. P.S., might want to use a spell-checker next time. That post is so riddled full of typos, it's not even funny.

I should add that if Take13's comments are helpful in producing positive changes, then they are a good thing. Sometimes beaurocracy needs to have its feather's ruffled to get things done.

Except their comments are not helpful. They're not even accurate. He's attacking a strawman that he created himself. Which is the sole reason we are laughing at his comments, and not bothering to take them seriously.

I'm no expert on legal matters, licencing issues etc. but IF something is wrong, then fixing it would be nice.

Also, just because someone makes a load of typos doesn't mean his/her sentences suddenly become unable to be taken seriously.

And before anyone mentions things about me being a h4x0r, I STOPPED CHEATING MANY MILENNIA AGO!!

The sarcasm was hardly evident, but whatever.

It really does seem like the author of the article has an axe to grind. I don't know what lead to his severing ties with UA, but my guess is that there is some bad blood.

If UA provides the source for their plugins, my understanding is that GPL is satisfied.

If UA gets support from UltimateArena, maybe a little 'thank you' is appropriate. In other words, I'm not sure that the commercial nature of the 'thank you' is clear. It seems quite problematic to say that UA is making money off the advert, unless UltimateArena's continued support is contingent on the advert (which seems unlikely since the applicable code is commented out in the latest versions).

It seems to me that only one of Invader Zim's stated objectives would be directly supported by this article. The fact that they're trying to achieve other ends not supported by the article would seem to indicate some bad blood. You want them to release the source, okay. Don't they do that? Regarding your other two complaints, how about you just don't use UA's stuff if it is 'useless'. They are *their* plugins, after all. Me thinks they can include 'useless' stuff if they want.

I don't understand what is wrong. This guy has a lot of his facts wrong.

                      From the Take13 article..

The GPL doesn't say anything about ownership of "the program or piece of code". The GPL says that if you have access to the software, you MUST be able to have access to the source code for no more money than the cost to ship it to you. It says nothing about the inability to make money off the software. It doesn't say you MUST give it away. The reason most GPL software is free (pay) is that even if you sell it, someone else can redistribute it for free, GPL license intact. You can make money off the product, but you can not make money on anyone requesting the source.

In fact, there are many companies that sell GPL software for money.

The only thing the GPL does is that it guarantees the right to have the source of the software you have, and it guarantees that right to everyone else who has the software just like you. This is called comissioned software, you retard.

This guy is retarded and I agree with UA in laughing at him.

If the EULA says that you cannot distribute files off the HLSDK, and the GPL says you must distribute all files, then wouldn't those two licenses be incompatable?
Simplex You deserve a medal fro that, If I hadnt have rad throught he commetns, I would have made a typo ridden half assed attempt at explaining exactly what you have here. In any case, the counter cehat community UA and Counter Hack should not be having handbags at dawn type flame wars, when they all have the same objective!!!

They both kick ass as organisations, so why have such a public slagging match, the only ones laugfhing are the cheater community, trust me, ive been looking at their forums.

And by the way newsies, I saw NO mention of the UAI tam, the UA Vigilence team and the other anti cheat proactive methods that have been relatively recently (couple of months) lkaunched. I may be wrong, Ive not been as regularly visiting csn since SWG has taken over my life.

I am ashemed of my actions, and I'm sorry. I am now playing fair and playing nice. I wouldn't go back to cheating unless I was paid a hefty sum.

The only thing that was commented out was the displaying of the message. The checks are still uncommented.

                          - Wow, I don't think I've seen the arbitrary "it causes lag!" argument in months. And here I thought we were rid of unfounded accusations of plugins causing lag.

-UA does not. UA has the same banner ads on their site that you see on this site.

-Last I saw the actual products (as opposed to the site, which GIR seems to not be able to distinguish between, much less be able to read the GPL) had available source code. Lord knows what you'll want with the statsme sources, but hey, who knows?
-i don't mean causing lag literally. what i meant was the plugins still run the checks to display the ad, but the ad itself isn't displayed.

-and as soon as that commented line

                          sprintf(Line3, "%s\n", "Thank you to UltimateArena.com (the only place where you can play Counter-Strike against each other to win money) for their generous donation to United Admins and continuous support of our anti-cheat efforts.");

is uncommented it will display ads. having ads on their website is something else than having ads on your server.

-i don't know what he would want to do with the statsme code. maybe get rid of some bugs, like he did when he was still on the statsme coding team.

You miss the point. Your concerns over how UA goes about their initiatives is shared by many people in the cheat community as well simply because they were so effective. . . especially in stopping major cheat systems like OGC.
actually, UA has nothing to do with that. cheating death was responsible for that, long before UA took it over. hell, even before VAC was introduced which caused the guys @ cheating death to stop releasing it.

About UA, I think the name of the var adShowTime is not a healthy thing to see in non-profit volunteer software, and he's clearly right pointing out it's separate code, there's only few people that keep an eye on these thing, and regardless of their motivation it's good they are there I think, UA should thank him for pointing out they are veering from the right path, and yes, things can be free, if we give out time and effort freely.
