I don't understand what is wrong. This guy has a lot of his facts wrong.

    From the Take13 article..
The GPL licence is an even more interesting licence. Basicly what the GPL says is that a program or piece of code is not property of anybody when it's released, instead it's property of everybody and everybody is free to use it if they meet a few terms. One of the terms is that again you are not allowed to make money off the final product(s). Finally and most importantly if an author uses GPL code in his/her project then the code he/she has authered automatically becomes GPL and therefore is also property of the public. If an author decides to distribute a program that has GPL code in it, he/she can only ask a compensation for the transfer medium (ie a CD-R or a disk). If the author distributes an application that has GPL code in it, then he/she also must make the source of that application available freely for everybody to see and use or put a notice in his application that the source of that application is available freely upon request.
The GPL doesn't say anything about ownership of "the program or piece of code". The GPL says that if you have access to the software, you MUST be able to have access to the source code for no more money than the cost to ship it to you. It says nothing about the inability to make money off the software. It doesn't say you MUST give it away. The reason most GPL software is free (pay) is that even if you sell it, someone else can redistribute it for free, GPL license intact. You can make money off the product, but you can not make money on anyone requesting the source.

In fact, there are many companies that sell GPL software for money.

The only thing the GPL does is that it guarantees the right to have the source of the software you have, and it guarantees that right to everyone else who has the software just like you. This is called comissioned software, you retard.

This guy is retarded and I agree with UA in laughing at him.

K, now that I've dealt with the idiots, back to the topic at hand. Just because an rule that is broken may be small, or not a big deal, the rule was still broken. Regardless of the intent behind this article, if the EULA was indeed VIOLATED by UA, then they should have to face consequnces.
If the EULA says that you cannot distribute files off the HLSDK, and the GPL says you must distribute all files, then wouldn't those two licenses be incompatable?

A blatant spelling error can easily be found just from reading the first bit of it. Quite honestly, I don't know what a "voilated" is.
just because someone's english isn't his native tongue and therefore the spelling isn't 100%, doesn't mean the article therefore is crap. grow up.

Regardless of justification, it seems like the cheat community -- lacking the guise of legitimacy -- would like nothing better than to shut down UA and its initiatives.
well, it's always nice to be accused of being a cheater, but now we (Take13) are an active part of the cheat community? that's a first. not only because we are partners with counter-hack (for example), i also run dns services for them.

but ofcourse, just because someone takes a stand that's negative on UA, we're real assholes and such.

Some people want to cause trouble. But me? Heh. Yes.

I also listen to a little nobody named Linus Torvalds:
GPL is designed so that people receive the value of other peoples copyrighted works in return for having made their own contributions. That is the fundamental idea of the whole license -- everything else is just legal fluff.
            (Italics mine)

To those who nitpick for attention, I say: stop being such a Fluffer!!

UA got to support themselves somehow. and the ads were not very intrusive. I mean come on, they have really good software for free.... How do you expect them to pay for everything (Hosting, development, other stuff), even if they are doing it for free?

Besides... Has anyone ever played on an UK2 server? Ads are YOUR friend. They allow you to play things for free. (YES, I know.... In the early beta days there was no cheating no C-D, no ads, no problems, the community wasn't about money and the grass was generally greener and my grandpa still played and I'm just a n00b pretending to know what CS is about)

              appended @ [time="1073464836"]

BESIDES, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT, COMPILE A COPY FOR YOURSELF WITHOUT THE ADS AND RUN IT ON YOUR OWN SERVER. IT IS OPEN SOURCE. RIGHT? Sorry for shouting, but I wanted this post to stand out. I don't see take13's problem.

umm this guy is on crack...

                1. Assuming it was violating agreements, the fact the code is still there and not being used doesn't mean they are still violating consumer rights.

2.The fact they thanked someone that contributed to them is not advertising unless that money was specifically givin to them for that purpose. I can go make a mod and thank csnation.net for all the good info and links to help pages... uh oh I violated under this tards reasoning.

3.Dude read what lic and the EULA say it is plain in your article that you misunderstood the EULA.

                4. Just because it says ad in the object doesn't mean it is an add. Just becuase I call my fist a gun, and I hit you in the face, doesn;t mean I shot you.

                5. Anyone else think this guy is a cheater, and wants UA to go away?

What Take13 wants, in this case, is

                    - for UA to stop putting stuff in their plugins that are pointless, yet cause lag

                    - for UA to not advertise on servers that are not theirs

                    - to disclose the GPL sources

Even after reading all the comments I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If it's regarding licensing then I'm sure everyone here has all fully licensed software on their pc's and we won't even mention the mp3 whohar that is going on at the moment.

As for the "Advertising" aspect of it all I don't give a fig. Who cares. Surf the web and you get spammed with pop ups, flash Adverts and what have you. Play games and you see brand names It's life and you just click, close and/or ignore.

As for the lag aspect, our server has Cheating Death, Statsme, chicken mod etc etc and I get no lag.

The article itself is well written.

I love how this guy makes grandios assumptions about abbreviated source code. Also, he makes the remark about "why they never took the code out", when VALVe still has yet to remove several completely disabled console commands. UA admitted that the code existed, they did not claim that it was, in fact, an advertisement. I code in commented out 'thank yous' on web pages that I build if someone helps me with a graphic or some such object. Several of them own businesses - does that make it an advertisement?

Also, code that has been commented out would not cause lag - it's not being processed.

How 'bout everybody gets off the assumption train and steps back into reality.

am i off base here?why else would someone care

and if i was counter-hack i would be concerned affiliating myself with tak13 since he is now suspect and more likely than not a hacker

and if counter-hack wants leagues too take it seriously then mabey they should look into this

-UA does not. UA has the same banner ads on their site that you see on this site.

-Last I saw the actual products (as opposed to the site, which GIR seems to not be able to distinguish between, much less be able to read the GPL) had available source code. Lord knows what you'll want with the statsme sources, but hey, who knows?

                              Bitter much?

You miss the point. Your concerns over how UA goes about their initiatives is shared by many people in the cheat community as well simply because they were so effective. . . especially in stopping major cheat systems like OGC.
