I lost loads of weight playing CS 1 > 1.3 as I wouldn't get out of my seat for meals. Now I'm a fat bastard and I blame Steam.

I agree with 2 points. The dumbing down of skill level and the slow down in pace of the game.

Its all very well making the game more about team work than individual skill, but is that what really makes us enjoy the game? I think the teamwork in CS just adds that special edge to the game, but individual skill is what makes FPS games fun.

CS won't be dead until the CPL adopts a new game ('Game X')... like when it switched from Q3A to CS for the 'main event', and all these Q3A gamers were like, "wtf?!" and all these CS players were like "weee!!!". When Game X comes along, CS players will be like, "wtf?!" and all the new Game X players will go like "weee!!!". Then Game Y will come along, and CS will be unofficially dead, but not forgotten.

Naturally, Game X is going to be CS2 and Game Y TF2, duh... (or maybe UT2003 and T:V, or FarCry and BF2003...)

Yeah I agree, the game to me isn't to be the best but to just frag, laugh, and have a good time. CS isn't getting old to me, the graphics is getting old but not the game play. its like any NES game like Super Mario Bros. the graphics on that is VERY old but its still fun to play right?

True, Game X and Game Y might eventually do that, but people out there might switch back to CS 1.5 for some reason that I can't think of and some people might just stick with CS2. I don't think CS is going to die that easily, it will die eventually but not for a long time as of now.

"However, given that I got back to a 1:1 frag ratio within 2 days, after months of abstinence, makes me doubt that everyone is suddenly much better than they were a year ago."

            rofl....

honestly this guy, if he has been playing CS for so long he doesn't seem that good (referring to his amazing 1:1 ratio), he hasnt scrimmed, played in leagues etc, thats fun imo.

but he does have good points about people crying hax and immature people.

hmmmm, i reckon the nerfing has made the game more individually skilled in an obscure kind of way, it requires you think rather then just mindlessly running into a hallway spraying getting random hs' all over the place. Only randoms spray anyway :P and as far as i can tell, all the "l33t" players who own pub servers i see tend to be the ones who strafe and AIM!! anyway.

                Beta 3 I started playing.

Beta 5.2 was the begining of it being popular.

Beta 6.2 Cs was one of the best.

Beta 6.5-7.0 was the begining of Cs's downfall

                Retail 1.0 was Cs's downfall

Retail 1.1-1.3 was an attempt by VALVe to bring the popularity back.

Retail 1.4-1.5 were really good patches.

Steam 1.6 we once again lose half the community due to mass changes nobody wants.

I have found the same problems with cs pubbing (scrimming is still almost as fun as its zenith days ) - but with all those arguements he used - how the HELL can he stand CoD? Don't get me wrong teh single player rocked - but for some1 who argued he likes skill levels to be illustrated a bit more, how can you like CoD? I played multiplayer for a week and I just got fed up and went back to hl mods. I do participate in the CAL-cod leage which is moderately fun and something different, but pubbing cod is TORTURE. I tried to break away from cs and find something else after 1.6, but hell there just isnt anything funner than cs except perhaps Natural-Selection (another HL mod) -Halo netcode sux -cod pubbing is torture -battelfield gets old with all the exploits -et is wannabe - so besides CS or NS wth am I going to play? supersmash bros for the n64 maybe? too bad ssb2 ruined that series -hopefully cs2 doesnt ruin cs

i refuse to play life-sucking mmorpgs -diablo2 seemed fun until i realized how pointlessly i spent my time -although i did make some money off it

jedi night 2 was kinda fun until they fixed the exploits and imbalances that made it fun to be an ass

The main point that the article has missed (btw i disagree that individual skill is undervalued, I'm still seeing individuals, that i know are not cheating, rack up huge kill ratios) is that it's a TEAM game. By trying to balance things out in the game engine for individuals, the thing that is left making the biggest difference is how a team works together. Having the best player on one team does not mean that team will win the rounds, team play makes the difference. Failing to notice this makes the article somewhat irrelevant.

Also, I agree with comment 36 (I started playing at beta 6.5) re the outcome of the various patches; forcing Steam on people and the seemingly pointless addition of the shield and the two new rifles have done CS no good as a game.

Take super Mario bros. the game is awesome because of its fun action EVEN though it was SUPER glitchy like u going thru walls on second level thru the pipe... CS has seem to have lost its flavor/ juicyness(not a real word) however some fixes were need like the server crash bug and some haxing stuff too.

I mean i don't ever remember asking Valve to remove the bunny-hoping or even ADDDDDDD the shield or even removing the deagle first shot is 100% accurate bug those were the physics we grew up with and LEARN to LUV Its like getting out of high school it's a hard and sad phase. What we grew up with was what made the game so fun like high school. we only truly miss things once there gone.

TO further help the down fall of the game valve made it more demanding by adding more stuff to an engine all ALREADY TO its limits like "WHY fix it is it ain't broke" seriously valve The game was fine in its beta stages. the community likes unrealistic things that's why we play games not to be like real life but to escape it.
