The most hilarious part for me was when he was making reference to "beta 8".

The two games Ive played the most are netquake1 and cs. I disagree with this guys argument about the game minimilizing the skill of good players.

I still regularly see good players completely dominate on public servers, kill/death ratios of 4:1. And I know their not hacking.

And if it took him 2 months to get back to a kill to win ratio of 1:1 I dont think he is anyone to be talking about CS's ability to allow good players to demonstrate their skill.

Cs is old, it may be breathing its last breath. But the reason he has given is incorrect.

the guy is burnt out, like most of us. he's looking for a game which emphasizes 'individual skill'. for me, cs had ceased to be fun on an 'individual skill' level long ago, it can still be fun on a 'teamplay' level. playing with a team in organized clanmatches, hanging out with friends, talking about strategies and moments-in-game afterwards, that 's still fun. that's how cs is different from quake. in a weird sorta way, cs is closer to an mmorpg like daoc (playing with friends), whereas quake resembles a warcraft3 1v1 matchup (you have only your own skill and p'haps game imbalances to blame when u lose).

i think i said the same thing b4 in beta6- it comes down to the devs being clear on where (the direction) they wanna take the game. personally i think the strength in cs lies in it's teamplay experience- so emphasis on changes should be on things like teamwork, communication with teammates, more focus on map-strategy/planning etc, p'haps even slow down the game! and less emphasis on weapons (dare i say Nerf Awp to the beta 6 version!) it's not entirely a twitch/reflex/skill game like quake or warcraft3 1v1, although those play a big part, the fun lies in playing as a team, in clanmatches. cs public internet-games = pure boredom for me long ago.

Can anyone say, "Counter-Strike 2". CS doesn't have to end, they just need to get it off that crappy graphics engine.

I wrote a short "response" to this article on my website. basically, I disagree with 80% of what this guy says. And when he starts saying things like "....it limits the effect of skill. Aim and movement are rudimentary and the game punishes aim when you're moving"

errm...yeah, well surely that is the point of a game like CS? Trying to find a happy medium between realism and Fun is not easy, but as far as I am concerned Counterstrike still does this the best...Basically this is an article of a persons opinion (agreed that it is probably the opinion of quite a few people..), but come on, how can you even start to compare Quake/QuakeII/Q3A with Counterstrike? Anybody who says Q3A is more fun than CS, basically has no place commenting on the "Death of CS".

anyway, just my 2 pennies worth...

I dont see how he can say a game that has taken up so much time simply sucks. If anything, its become a burnt out classic like Quake. Its not that the game sucks,, its just that we've been playing it for so god damn long now. Its like eating Pizza every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eventually, you get sick of eating pizza, but that doesnt mean pizza sucks. I do agree that the nerfing of weapons took away from the game instead of making it better. I miss being able to spray 5 guys with one clip from a colt and killing them all, instead of now where you can only seem to kill three if anything with one clip, and the fourth one's bound to kill you.

Now come on Dave, if I owned a Ferrari and drove it every day, I'm sure that I would yearn for my Skoda again sometimes.

Sounds like this guy has never scrimmed before. Of course CS is going to get hugely repetitive if all you do is pub, because it involves almost no strategy and half the time you get headshotted by someone going full auto midair across the map with an AK.

How bout bringing back the 29 official maps from previous versions that have been dropped, since the majority of current CS players came in after retail version 1.0

I think some people just play CS too much (Like the #2 guy FAF mentioned) I play maybe once or twice a week, and I still get that gaming rush when I play.

Moderation is good. It keeps my interest in CS.

He's right. CS is no longer fun. Back in the late betas (7.0 was the best), I would skip meals for CS. Ever since 1.0 when the community changed, and moreover in 1.3 when they changed the hotboxs, CS has only been mildly interesting. Between 1.3 and now I've quit more times than I can count. Sometimes for a month or two, sometimes for 6-9 months, or this time where since January I've probably played 20-30 hours this whole year (with the exception of two LAN parties). CS is no longer new, no longer interesting, and most of all, no longer fun. If I play a 30min map every 3-4 weeks now I'm doing good. Surprisingly I can still go in there and get a 2:1 ratio without sweating it, but it still holds my attention none. CS will go down in my books as a great experience and a great game, but something happened. It is no longer that great game. CS: Rest in peace.

I also agree with the author, ET is a great game

But on the other hand, there was no beta 8, asshat.

I've been playing CS for a long time, a long long time...and I have to disagree with the bit about CS limiting individual skill. I'm not good, in fact I'm a crappy player but I do know some ways of scoring some kills (at least on cs_assault as a T), and from what I've seen, CS limiting

individual skill is nonsense. I've continually experienced leading the "stacked" side and slowly but surely racking up the kills but when I switch sides (or somebody else is on their "A" game), everybody else tries to follow in tow.

Although I do find the cheating and absurd administrations quite disturbing.

I have started playing CS with music and actually being friendly. OMG what a difference; It's fun again, and I don't care about my score! I think after playing for so long (since Flash-bangs could kill hosties) I became obsessed with pwning the other pub-nubs and my stats and all that other bullshit and forgot something: the point of playing a GAME is not winning, but to have fun.
