Firing Squad has an article written by, what else, a Counter-Strike gamer and his farewell article to the said game. Yet unlike most CS gamers, this particular one is quitting our favorite hobby, and going out with an interesting read. In it, he compares previous games the writer has played and CS itself, past and current CS experiences, and some great merits into why we should let go of our favorite game and move along.
So, any arguments about whether or not CS would be better the way it was "back then" would be completely unreliable. I know I enjoyed it more then, but I've also been exposed to many more games since, and the community has had time to mature (relatively speaking). I could no more tell you the specific reasons why I found my latest stint with CS disappointing, than I could explain why I have a weakness for girls of average build with light brown hair, hazel eyes and a broad smile.Although the article ends with a low note, it does in fact bring up great points and highlights of the aging CS compared to the recent other FPS games. You should definitely give this article a read.
