HLDS Update

Erik Johnson at Steam has reported an update to the recent vulnerability within dedicated servers on both Windows and Linux platforms. The exploit made sensitive files in a server to be downloadable by clients, if allowdownload was set to 1.

There is a new update for both Windows and Linux dedicated server administrators available now. This update does not affect you if you do not run a dedicated server.

Well that was nice and fast, if this had been your normal twice a year patch system a lot of custom map servers might have died because people don't really download map packs from the servers websites they just get each separate map from the server as it get loaded up. so YAY for custom map servers! YAY for Valve! and YAY for Steam!

darn.. I was hoping that maybe I wouldn't have to download 50 stupid wav files of "DOH!" or "KILLINGSPREE" or "HEADSHOT." It seems that there's a new wav being created every day for cs.

Heres an example of the exploit. If you type this the server will download the file(if it exists) to your cstrike folder. You can also get the mysql password for psycostats or hlstats. -

Downloading a large file will crash the server -

Don't pee in your pants about it. It was released 2 days ago and the patch was released yesterday so now the admins are responsible. See for yourself -
