The update that was released earlier today was very "messed" up. Most people lost all of their games and some other things. I have never really been mad at VALVe but now I am. They should have tested this before they released it to the thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) of people that use Steam and it's games.

I believe that Steam should still be in beta stages. It obviously isn't performing like a "final" program would. But still, bare with VALVe. Numerous things have been going on (eg: the leaking of HL:2 and CS:CZ) so give them some slack. They deserve it.

I've said this before and I will say it again. "Steam will be an excellent program when all the bugs are worked out. I believe that Steam is one of the best things VALVe has ever created."

The question I must pose to that is, How long must we wait for the program to perform as they promised?

It's been a lot more rough than any of us expected...VALVe needs to hurry, they are losing fans with all of this very rapidly.

Oh great. i downloaded the first steam update. Then it freezes as I am trying to play. Then I try over and over, then it finally works. Now I download the recall update. It updates. Then for some reason it downloads again. Then my cs gets stuck at preparing to play. Then I go to the monitor and I see that HL and CS are updating. THen it stops updating. Then starts again randomly. It probably removed CS and HL but it won't even update now. I hate steam. Why would they not test these huge bugs such as removing your games completely before releasing it?

Looks like another update might be coming, the steam site is all buggy again, as usual before an update, and steam seems to be stalling.
does anyone here think the steampowered site is running off of steam itself lol.

ravage777: I think most of us are going through the same problem as you are with the random updating...but on my monitor it won't even tell me what it is updating. It just says 'Scanning...'

Give them a few more months. I am guessing around summer of next year everything will be good. It seems like a long time but it will go by fast. CS:CZ should keep you busy (assuming that it will be released this year).

I think he was talking about the fact that shield has horrible hitboxes so that you can't shoot their exposed parts and often even when they lower their shield you can't shoot them and it's all just guess work.
well with current networking hardware it would be hard to synchronise the position of the shield on the clients with the position of the shield on the server, due to obvious latencies involved. therefore i feel there will always be the effect of 'buggy' hitboxes on the shield, even though on a LAN with 0 latency it might look fine.

Damnit now I have to re-install cs and hl. That's just perfect.

Assuming is quite a task indeed, and yes the summer of next year is a long time, I can forsee people downloading games from Steam and then for some odd reason they lose the whole file because of Steam, imagine the trouble that will cause to the whole 'Content Delivery System' but with all that said, the idea is very genuine and it does 'push the envelope' but it seems like the envelope has been dropped and burned with all of the bugs floating around.

Steam should have stayed beta longer as well as CS 1.6, in my opinion 1.6 is still a work in progress, as it is probably the opinion of many. I was very partial to 1.5, it was the first serious version of CS i actually payed attention to since Beta 4...

Steam is without a doubt, the downfall of CS. By using Steam and the new system, they've shafted the modeling community quite badly
custom models do work with steam. try it yourself.

Hmm...Look at what I found from Taylor Sherman (Steam Developer):

                              Today's Update (Taylor Sherman's Words
OK. So, yeah, that sucked. Suffice to say I'm sorry the update got so screwed up.

                              To answer some questions:

                              - we recalled the update, meaning rolled back Steam to the previous version. You will get that version again AUTOMATICALLY when you launch Steam the next time (if you haven't already).

                              - yes, going back to the old version is causing Steam's cache (.gcf) files to get deleted, and many people are having to download content again. I know, this sucks. For those lucky folks who did not re-start Steam during the time that the new version was out there, they shouldn't have noticed anything change.

                              - because of the above, the system load is pretty high, and Steam is going to be fairly laggy when downloading content

Venting your frustrations here is understandable but please don't take it out on each other.

                              Taylor

I am currently downloading CS over again through STEAM for some odd reason, I need to waste time anyways. Humm I just looked down at the copyright and I saw rizzuh's name was john jensen, weird. Heh we could call rizzuh 'JJ' and start singing 'Good Times' to him...then again...that would be kinda, weird. Nevermind...

Edit: I just tried to get into the Steam forums on steampowered.com, I got a 'too many connections' error, seems like the community is out in force tonight.
